Job overview

Crosfields is both passionate and successful at swimming. We have many individuals and teams competing annually at county and national level, from year 5 upwards. Crosfields have been placed 4th overall in the IAPS final and last year the senior children were ranked 2nd in the region by the ISA. Key to this success is the simple belief that high levels of participation can exist alongside high levels of competition to achieve excellence.

Crosfields are looking for a dynamic experienced teacher who can deliver our philosophy. This person will be responsible for running the department and creating an inclusive can-do approach for all swimmers, alongside creating opportunities for swimming competitively and excelling in the sport. They should be proficient in the learn to swim program with experience of the competitive element of the sport.

Proof of our belief is that many former Crosfields’ pupils have continued their love of the sport and qualified for Swim England Nationals and British Swimming Nationals as well as extending their love of the water to British rowing and kayaking.

Junior School Swimming

Each year group from Nursery to year 6 have a weekly, ability set, swimming lesson. In addition to their curriculum lessons, they may also attend swim school as an after school co-curricular activity.

From year 3, children are selected to join the school swimming team, attending an extra weekly training session. These squads take part before school and work towards inter-school galas, squad championships and inter-house competitions, learning the competitive elements of the sport.

For those who wish to extend the sport, swimmers have easy access to join Tilehurst Swimming Club, who train at Crosfields pool.

Senior School Swimming

Students in the senior school receive swimming as part of the PE curriculum. In addition, students can join the senior swim squads.

There are three morning swim squads covering all year groups run by a performance Level 3 coach. These swimmers compete regularly with other schools and take part in external competitions such as ESSA (English School Swimming Association) competition and ISA (Independent Schools Association).

Founded in 1957, the school is now run as a charitable trust under a single governing body.  In 2021 the school created two distinct areas, the Junior School which encompasses all year groups from Nursery to Year 6, and the Senior School for Years 7 to 11.  New for the 2021/22 academic year is a brand new Senior School building which provides an excellent setting for older students as the school extends to 16 and it will enjoy its first cohort of GCSE students in 2023.

Vision and values

First and foremost, the school aims to create an environment where every child is safe, happy and supported. It strives to offer a curriculum that is varied enough to allow every unique individual to discover their talents. Teachers encourage children to put in the effort and be resilient. They hope to give pupils the ability to be independent thinkers who challenge and enquire.

Numeracy and ICT skills are especially good at this school, along with reading.  Creative subjects such as design and technology and art are another focus. The curriculum as a whole gives pupils experience in linguistic, mathematical, scientific, technological and social areas, as well as physical education.  Extra-curricular activities range from golf and fencing to Forest School and chess.  School trips are also organised to broaden pupils’ horizons.

ISI report

“Pupils throughout the school develop very good skills across different subjects and the school prepares them very well indeed for the next stage of their education. The curriculum, together with an excellent range of extra-curricular activities, trips and visits, supports pupils’ learning extremely well.”
