Alec Hunter Academy, Stubbs Lane, Braintree

Essex, CM7 3NR

Head of Vocational Education

MPS (+ TLR 1b £7698)

Required for September 2018

NOR: 775

Alec Hunter Academy is seeking to appoint a dynamic, enthusiastic and highly organised individual to take on the overall leadership, internal verification and external assessment of the school’s vocational courses. These currently include BTECs in Business, Travel & Tourism and PE, WJEC Level 1/2 Award in Retail Business and a V-Cert in Craft, but we are keen to explore further possibilities. A background in teaching vocational courses, and experience of the associated administrative processes, would be beneficial, but applications are welcome from candidates from all subject areas. The role will encompass the management of all aspects of the various vocational curricula and resources, as well as monitoring the quality and consistency of provision. A commitment to raising standards and forming positive relationships with students is essential, along with an attention to detail and an ability to communicate suitably with colleagues at all levels.

A successful candidate taking on this position would join a creative and supportive Middle Leadership Group, which plays a key role in driving improvement at the school.  We are therefore seeking resourceful, motivated applicants, with a track record of outstanding classroom practice and evidence of effective leadership.

Alec Hunter Academy is a mixed, 11-16 comprehensive school with an established reputation as a welcoming and forward-thinking learning community. In addition, we are full partners in the Braintree Sixth Form, which provides opportunities for some of our staff to teach at Key Stage 5. The school works in close partnership with Saffron Walden County High School, one of the highest performing schools in Essex, within the Saffron Academy Trust. Numerous opportunities for professional development exist through this partnership and our membership of several local networks, including two teaching school alliances. These are exciting times at Alec Hunter, since our recent Ofsted inspection, in July 2017, graded the school as ‘good’ for the first time in its history, with the report noting that “School leaders have established a culture where expectations of pupils and teachers are high and improvement is rapid”.

Our school is committed to safeguarding and protecting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share this commitment. A Disclosure and Barring Service Check at enhanced level will be required for this post. If you would like to visit the school prior to making an application, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange this.

Closing date: Wednesday 21st February 2018.

Interviews: week commencing 26th February 2018.
