Job overview

The King Alfred School (TKAS) is a thriving, friendly and vibrant community where everyone is provided with the tools to thrive. We ensure that we provide an environment where everyone can feel confident, secure and valued. Our core ethos is ‘Belong. Believe. Be Proud.’

We are looking for an exceptional Head of Year who supports our ethos. You will be key working with a team of Tutors and an Assistant Head of Year. You will lead, manage and monitor the academic progress and pastoral development of approximately 250 students within a particular Year group. Working closely with staff, parents/carers and students, you will promote high standards of attendance, behaviour and a culture of aspiration across the Year group.

As Head of Year you will be part of the Extended Leadership Team at TKAS, and an integral part of the school’s Pastoral & Inclusion Team. You will use academic and pastoral data to identify, intervene and evaluate, working with Heads of Department and the Leadership Team to enable our students to make progress and improve their life chances.

We as a school share a collective philosophy to develop the whole child, combining an intellectually challenging academic environment with outstanding pastoral care and support. The school has an extensive CPD programme to support all staff.

This is a very exciting opportunity for an experienced Head of Year, or an experienced teacher ready to step-up to this key role. The importance of the role is reflected in both the associated TLR and the teaching allocation (5 additional hours protected non-contact time weekly).

We are an 11-18 mixed comprehensive with 1197 students on roll, serving the Somerset towns of Burnham on Sea, Highbridge and the surrounding villages. Situated close to the M5, we are within easy reach of Bristol and Exeter, as well as fast train links to London and the North.

About The King Alfred School, an Academy

The King Alfred School Academy (TKASA) is a mixed, non-denominational community secondary school and sixth form for pupils aged 11-18. It is located in Highbridge. Somerset, and has about 1,350 pupils. The school moved to its present site in 1957, where it was officially opened in 1958. Predecessor institutions were known as The King Alfred County Secondary School, and Burnham County Secondary School, which occupied a number of sites in Burnham-on-Sea.

Over the past six years since academisation the Academy has seen rapid improvement, with student numbers increasing year on year to now being oversubscribed, a high performing Sixth Form Centre which has seen numbers triple since 2017, an ambitious and knowledge rich curriculum and very strong behaviour systems in school that have created exceptional conduct from students, recognised by the Local Authority as being a beacon of success. In 2023 the Academy was acknowledged by the Regional Director for its glowing Ofsted report having moved from Inadequate to Good in such a short period (see report below). The school motto is Belong, Believe, Be Proud and this creates an Academy that is inclusive, diverse and a great place to work. It is a real Community school.
