We are seeking a dynamic professional who has a range of effective interpersonal and management skills enabling them to work effectively with students, parents and staff to make a positive impact upon the achievement and wellbeing of our students.  The right individual will help maintain and develop our already outstanding pastoral and student support systems within our inclusive school culture.

This is a key position within the school, providing exciting career and development opportunities. You must be committed to ensuring the highest of standards working, alongside the other heads of year and leadership team.

The Head of Year role provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to lead and manage their year group and tutor team and develop truly impactful and effective student support.  The role holder will be in a unique position to develop systems and innovative ideas which directly impact on the pastoral care of their cohort of students and maximise their outcomes; encouraged through the development of strong relationships with students and parents. 

Main accountabilities: 

• Develop a Culture of Achievement across the year group

• Maximising student progress and attainment through robust systems of monitoring and tracking

• Lead and manage a tutor team

• Encouraging our positive and respectful school culture in which staff know and care about the students

• To fulfil the role of a deputy designated safeguarding lead within the safeguarding team

• Ensuring effective intervention and support for student attendance and behaviour

• Ensuring effective parent/carer communication

Therfield School is a mixed secondary with sixth form based in Leatherhead, Surrey. The school is a non-selective, non-denominational state school with 1,178 students aged 11-18, approximately 236 of whom attend the sixth form. 

The school has a partnership with the Leatherhead Responsible Business Network, which provides a range of activities throughout the year to help prepare pupils for the working world. These have included careers fairs and mentoring schemes.

There are five core values at the heart of the secondary: respect, responsibility, perseverance, independence and integrity. Teachers encourage students to develop their leadership skills, while fostering in pupils the courage to stand up for what is right as they progress into adult life. 

Self-discipline and self-worth are instilled into pupils in order to help them achieve to their full potential. Therfield School wants its young people to grow into remarkable citizens and so develops their skills, knowledge and character alongside their studies. 

Leadership and teamwork are key to the school’s ethos and a number of programmes are offered to expand these skills, including the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, Surrey School Games and World Challenge Expeditions. The secondary holds specialist status in sports, with facilities including a gym, tennis courts and an astroturf pitch.
