Salary: This role is assigned to the Teaching Pay Group: Leadership and the salary will be £40,000 - £50,000 dependent upon qualifications and experience.

The Head of Years 7 & 8 is directly responsible for the Pastoral Care of the boys in his/her charge.  This involves motivating pupils and staff, liaising closely with the Year 7 & 8 Tutors and other staff.  The Head of Senior School will be a powerful advocate for Davenies, developing and promoting the Year 7 & 8 experience to the wider school community and beyond.  As a member of the Pastoral Leadership Team, the successful candidate will influence strategy and practice and be expected to contribute to the future development of the School.  The Head of Years 7 & 8 is required to work closely with, and report to, the Deputy Headmaster.


  • Leading the Year 7 & 8 tutor team
  • Acting as a role model for the boys and staff
  • Being responsible for the welfare of pupils in Years 7 & 8
  • Assisting and supporting the Deputy Headmaster
  • Setting high standards of work, teaching and professional conduct
  • Acting as coordinator for the boys and staff over pastoral matters
  • Attendance at school functions for this part of the school
  • Taking assemblies
  • Helping the Deputy Headmaster to update relevant policies

Communication and Organisation

  • Communicating and consulting with the parents of Senior School pupils
  • Liaising with Form Tutors over pastoral matters concerning boys in their tutor group
  • Attending meetings of the Pastoral Leadership Team
  • Working closely with the subject teachers of the boys in the Senior School
  • Supporting the DAS Coordinator in the organisation and delivery of the Year 7 & 8 compulsory enrichment programme, Davenies Award Scheme (DAS) 
  • Organising any events, outings and trips relevant to the Senior School, including Senior Society, Year 7 Summer Term Induction Day, and Year 8 post-CE Leavers’ Programme
  • Organising and monitoring Year 7 & 8 pupils in their positions of responsibility


  • Overall responsibility for day-to-day pastoral care of the boys
  • Dealing with parental queries relating to discipline or pastoral matters
  • Dealing with complaints from boys, parents and staff with regard to misbehaviour
  • Promoting school policy and procedure
  • Disseminating information in staff meetings

Additional Duties

  • To teach a reduced timetable – most subjects can be accommodated
  • To be a Year 7 or 8 Tutor
  • To carry out supervision duties, as requested
  • To contribute significantly to the extra-curricular life of the school
  • To attend residential trips and educational visits
  • To attend at Parent Meetings for the classes taught
  • To attend INSET, as required by the Headmaster
  • To identify INSET opportunities for staff
