This is a fantastic opportunity to join a school at a time of development and growth. Portfield School, a non-maintained special school based in Christchurch, was founded in 1971 by parents of children with autism. Managed by Autism Wessex, the school supports children and young people with autism and associated difficulties aged 3-19.

We are looking to appoint a dynamic Head Teacher able to shape and deliver positive change. Therefore, a strong background in leading school initiatives is essential. As our Head Teacher, you will play a vital role influencing and maintaining positive relationships with students, parents and staff and have outstanding communication skills at all levels including the board.

The Head Teacher will have full responsibility for the school, supporting the School Improvement and Development Plan, providing strategic leadership in the creation of SEN curriculum, leading teaching & learning standards, driving improvement on quality of teaching and managing employee performance, safeguarding & promoting the welfare of children.

What we do

At Portfield School we are proud of a truly unique curriculum design, which is flexible, creative and tailored to the individual. The curriculum offer is holistic and enables the self-confidence, resilience and self-advocacy of the students to bloom as well as allowing the individual to achieve accredited qualifications. In addition to academic achievement, we build emotional wellbeing and resilience and develop the students’ social and independence skills.

Our holistic curriculum includes not only education, but also therapy, the development of skills for life, independence, and a focus on accessing the world of work through a highly tailored work experience programme.

At Portfield School, respect and equity underpin everything we do.
