Job overview

The appointment of a new Head in 2023 is timely given that, in keeping with the ambitious ethos of the School, we are aiming to expand student numbers by 50% in the next few years. In so doing, the School will inevitably need to change in both nature and organisation, and the new Head will have the opportunity to imprint their own fresh and innovative thinking. Expanding the School will allow us to reconsider our curriculum, currently limited in scope because of the School’s small size. The new Head may wish to rethink our Core Curriculum and consider extending the range of AS- and A-level subjects on offer. There will also be physical changes to the School associated with this expansion. The new Head will have the exciting challenge of being able to influence and lead on a variety of new building and facilities projects. The School has consistently operated to budget and has a healthy level of reserves. We receive additional funding from the DfE to support the small size of the School as well as our broader mission. We also benefit from strong strategic partnerships that have enabled additional financial support.

As we grow, our initial mission and values may be challenged, and there is likely to be an increasing tension between our quest to educate the next generation of bright young mathematicians and to simultaneously widen participation in the mathematical sciences. The new Head will have a key role to play in managing this tension and adapting to change whilst preserving the School’s intrinsic values. KCLMS is fully engaged in the formation of a network of university maths schools in the country. The network is in its early days, so there will be many opportunities to help shape its future, and we see this as an exciting proposition for the new Head. This will be an interesting and beneficial movement for us to be part of, and we expect the new Head to take a strong and influential role. The Head will, in addition, learn from and with, be supported by, and provide valuable input into the family of Head Teachers who are leading each school in the network.
