Job overview

Following the retirement of our current Head teacher in 2018 after 12 successful years in post, we are now seeking to appoint an inspirational and experienced leader with the vision, skills, qualities and dynamism to continue to develop all aspects of the school, building on its strong foundations.

About The School

John Spence Community High School is an 11-16 Sports College with a reputation for social inclusion, high academic standards and for providing a high level of student support. Recently judged by Ofsted as ‘Good’ (November 2017) we are located in the borough of North Tyneside and have recently moved into a brand-new school building with state of the art facilities. Our dedicated staff are well supported by a strong governing body and very engaged parents. The school is part of the North Tyneside Learning Trust, a community of maintained schools working together to achieve excellence. We have strong links with Tyne Coast College which provides Sixth Form and Further Education opportunities in the Borough.

John Spence Community High School is the Lead School for the North East Partnership SCITT: a specialist physical education initial teacher training provider offering both secondary and primary post graduate training places. The North East Partnership SCITT is the largest physical education provider in the region and one of the largest in the country. It has been judged as outstanding in its last three Ofsted inspections and is consistently ranked in the top ten in the Good Teacher Training Guide. In 2015 it was identified as the best provider of post graduate teacher training in the country.

The School's Ethos, Values and Vision

At John Spence we value all of the young people who study here and work hard to try to ensure that they all reach their full potential.

Our School motto ‘Fit for life’ is at the heart of everything we do. We offer a broad range of educational and vocational experiences to allow pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to make their way in life. Our role as a specialist sports college allows us to develop an extra dimension which enriches the lives of all students and enables us to strengthen links through sport within the wider community.

The success of the school is reflected in both its subscription level – oversubscribed in recent years despite the demographic landscape - as well as its healthy budgetary position.

On ParentView 97% of parents agreed they would recommend the school to another parent.

Values and Vision

We are a fully inclusive school that sits at the heart of our community and recognise that in order to excel students need to be supported and challenged through every stage of their school journey.

Our ‘Fit for Life’ ethos encapsulates our purpose as a school; we want our students to thrive in their communities when they leave school as resilient, skilled and considerate individuals. These attributes will develop through the opportunities that each student will receive both within and beyond the classroom. All we ask of our students is that they seize these opportunities and participate fully in school life.

To succeed in our ambition, that all individuals leave us ‘Fit for Life’, we work in collaboration with local schools and organisations. Good relationships with parents and carers are very important to us. This partnership is essential if our students are to succeed and we are delighted that our parents work closely with us by supporting the school in the standards and expectations that we have. The connection between school and home is of paramount importance and sits at the heart of our values.

John Spence Community High School is also the Lead School and Governing Body of the North East Partnership SCITT; a specialist physical education initial teacher training provider offering both secondary and primary postgraduate training places.

The staff and governors are passionate in their drive to provide the very best education.  We seek to create an inspiring environment where students feel safe to take risks in their learning and where achievement is celebrated by all.

Ofsted report

“The curriculum is broad and varied. Pupils are guided well onto a range of courses at key stage 4. The school’s ‘Fit for Life’ programme promotes personal development effectively. There is an impressive range of extra-curricular activities, particularly in sport.

Procedures to safeguard pupils are rigorous. Vulnerable pupils are supported very well to engage fully in school life.

Pupils’ attendance is above the national average. In the past, the proportion of disadvantaged pupils who were regularly absent from school has been high, but it is now reducing.”
