Westray Junior High School is a mixed, secondary comprehensive, non-denominational all-through school without sixth form situated on Westray, one of Scotland’s Orkney Islands, with an overall population of under 600 people. Due to its placement, it caters for a very small number of children. Its nursery has nine 3-4 year olds, its infant room 14 P1-2 pupils, and its middle stages room with 20 P3-5 pupils and 14 P6-7 students. Its secondary school has 15 students studying between S1-4.

Values and Vision

The school aims to develop confident, successful and responsible students who are effective contributors, who are able to learn in an educational environment that is creative, challenging and enjoyable. It is a strong advocate of values such as tolerance and mutual respect.

Most teachers are residents of the island, with a couple of specialists flying in especially. Due to its status as a Fairtrade School, it partners with a school in Chitengu, Malawi. There is also a strong celebration of the culture of the island itself and an encouragement for all children to act together with the community.

Estyn

“Across the nursery and the school most children and young people learn and achieve well. Overall, the school supports most children and young people well to develop and learn. [Key strengths include] children’s and young people’s achievements in a range of interdisciplinary learning projects [and] the school’s use of its local environment to develop children’s and young people’s understanding of Orcadian and Scottish history and culture.”
