Position Information 

Merewether High School is an academically selective school located in Newcastle. It has a high profile and is acknowledged for achieving excellence. Merewether High School provides an inspirational model of public education that nurtures the academic, physical, social and emotional wellbeing of all students. Our 1080 students are enrolled from a wide geographical area. In partnership with the Muloobinbah Local Aboriginal Education Consultative Group, the school supports Aboriginal students to achieve success in the HSC whilst connecting with their cultural identity. An active and supportive parent body engage in parent learning groups and collaboratively lead our P&C and canteen.

The school has built a strong community committed to excellence, diversity and the fostering of individual talents. Merewether High School's 93 highly skilled, experienced and dedicated staff members provide quality teaching and learning experiences with an emphasis on, and understanding of, strategies that challenge, develop high potential and meet the needs of gifted students. Staff encourage students to be innovative, confident and independent learners who possess strong ethical values and a highly developed social conscience. The school has high expectations of all students, consistent with each student's ability and the belief that everyone can achieve their personal best.

Specific Selection Criteria 
Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria, 

1. Proven exemplary teaching practice and ability to lead a diverse faculty team in continual improvement that fosters student engagement and promotes inspirational learning experiences, through evidence-based teaching and effective management practice.

2. Demonstrated curriculum leadership to build the capacity of staff and lead the development and implementation of high quality, differentiated programs and assessment for High Potential and Gifted students. 

3. Highly developed and visible interpersonal skills with a proven capacity to build positive relationships and promote engagement across the school community, helping to create and sustain a vibrant and positive school culture of integrity, diversity and excellence.

4. Demonstrated capacity to work as a collaborative and engaged member of the school Executive team to lead whole school programs that align with the school’s strategic directions and enhance learning outcomes for High Potential and Gifted students, using data informed deliverance and evaluation of programs and practices.

  
General Selection Criteria 
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
