Position Information 

South Sydney High School is a proud comprehensive, co-educational school situated in Maroubra and has an enrolment of 740 students. Our school caters to the learning and wellbeing needs of a diverse socio-economic and multicultural community where 46% of our student population are from a language background other than English and 5% identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. This provides a dynamic learning environment which benefits all. We offer a well-rounded, balanced curriculum that provides outstanding opportunities through to the HSC and beyond. 

A wide range of co-curricular activities provide opportunities for our students to excel and develop their talents and connections to the world beyond school. This includes: an extensive music program, Homework Club, High Potential and Gifted Program, an established volunteering program, Opportunity Programs, enrichment opportunities in art, drama and public speaking and a purpose designed Student Services Centre. SSHS students participate in both a range of recreational sport and knockout sporting competitions in the summer and winter seasons. We have well established, flourishing student leadership programs including a dynamic Student Representative Council (SRC) and active prefect body.

Specific Selection Criteria 
Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria: 
  • Approval to teach Personal Development, Health and Physical Education with proven ability in the delivery of quality teaching and in developing whole-school programs to improve engagement for a diverse range of students including coordination of whole-school sport.
  • Demonstrated deep knowledge of the PDHPE syllabus and capacity to lead the development of high quality, differentiated programs and assessment practices to improve student engagement and achievement.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the PE Faculty and build teacher capacity within a diverse faculty and across the school, supporting staff at various stages of their professional development.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and demonstrated capacity to be a dynamic member of the school executive team to lead improvement initiatives, aligned to the strategic directions and achieve system negotiated targets.
  • Proven capacity to build positive relationships and engagement across the school community which help to create a vibrant and positive school culture of respect and learning.

General Selection Criteria 
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
 
Conditions 

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
