Job overview

The Council of Management of Upton House School invites applications for the role of Head from April 2026, succeeding Mrs Rhian Thornton after ten years of dedicated leadership. This is a truly exciting time to join an ambitious and thriving prep school and help it realise the next phase of its development.

Upton House is a happy, nurturing and academically successful co-educational prep school that educates almost 300 children aged 2 to 11. Located in the heart of Windsor, Upton House develops confident, independent learners through high academic standards, exceptional pastoral care and a personalised approach. The school excellently prepares children for their senior schooling and life beyond, and is sector-leading for its technology and digital innovations which were acknowledged as a Significant Strength in its recent ISI inspection.

Over recent years, Upton House has seen substantial strategic developments including the move to coeducation and the expansion of its nursery provision to operate 48-weeks-a-year. As such, the foundations have been well laid for the next Head to build upon the school’s many successes and continue to strengthen its market position through an inspirational, visible and ambitious approach. With the support of a dedicated Council, the Head will devise a compelling vision and effective strategy for the school over the coming years, in light of the challenges facing the independent sector.

The successful candidate will demonstrate alignment with Upton House’s inclusive, holistic and community-oriented ethos, and have the ability to clearly articulate its strengths in the highly competitive local marketplace. He or she will have first-class communication and influencing skills, with a proven ability to engage with, inspire and lead the whole Upton House community with a collaborative and empowering approach. This person will also have the strategic skills and flexible mindset to drive the school forward to ensure it continues to thrive in challenging market conditions.

The Council welcomes applicants from a wide range of backgrounds and is open to considering serving Heads or Deputy Heads within a prep, primary or international school environment as well as those currently based in senior schools.

Further information on Upton House can be found via the school’s website and a creative insight into the school and the role can be viewed here .

Please apply via Odgers  with a CV and covering letter by Friday 12 September at 09:00 BST.

Upton House School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.
