Job overview

The Headship of Abberley Hall offers the opportunity to lead one of the best boarding focused prep schools in the country with the benefit of being part of the Malvern family of schools.

Abberley Hall is a 3-13 IAPS, non- selective, day and boarding, coeducational school.  It is set in spectacular grounds in rural Worcestershire and offers children an idyllic education encompassing a myriad of opportunities backed by a rigorous academic approach.  Over 90 acres of beautiful grounds and tremendous facilities mean that the school can stretch and develop children to go on to some of the leading senior schools in the country, whether locally or nationwide.  The boarding community is remarkably strong and is at the core of Abberley’s ethos.

Will & Beth Lockett will have enjoyed 6 happy years leading the school, and with the support of Malvern College, it is a great time for a new leader to take up the reins for the next chapter of Abberley’s development.

The Governors are seeking an inspirational educationalist, committed to boarding and the breadth that boarding focused schools can offer.  The successful candidate will have a strong academic background and experience of senior leadership, preferably in the independent sector, including some experience of boarding.

Abberley Hall is a coeducational school for children aged between two and 13 in the Worcestershire countryside. Children attend the pre-preparatory school and nursery up to the age of 7, before joining the boarding and day preparatory school from the age of eight. The grounds extend across 90 acres, parts of which are used as an Outdoor Learning area and for playing sport or participating in after-school activities. Around 300 pupils are taught at the school, spending a significant amount of time outdoors. Lessons in French, drama, science and PE lessons are provided from an early age.

Abberley Hall tries to make learning an exciting experience, striving for innovation while maintaining a strong academic ethos and offering support to any pupils in need of it. A strong culture of performance and participation is encouraged from the outset of a child’s time at Abberley Hall. All pupils get regular opportunities to play sport and music, take part in theatrical performances and speak publically.

ISI report

"Caring and supportive staff have created a welcoming environment where children can achieve well in line with the school's values and ethos, and develop their skills appropriately. The well-resourced outdoor play areas, including the Nursery garden, enable the younger children in the Nursery to engage in imaginative role play and adventurous physical activities. All children respond well to the staff's expectations of them and, as a result, they are enthusiastic and motivated learners."
