Job overview

The Governors of Bootham School, York are seeking a new Head to follow the retirement of Chris Jeffery in Summer 2023.

Founded by local Quakers in 1823 to educate their sons, Bootham is today a co-educational day and boarding school of approximately 600 students, aged 3-18 and located in the historic city centre of York.

Proud of its strong Quaker heritage and tradition, Bootham is innovative and forward-thinking with a values-led, socially principled ethos. It enjoys a strong local and increasingly national reputation for academic and co-curricular excellence.

The senior school is on Bootham, very close to the ancient city walls, Bootham Bar and York Minster. The buildings range from 18th and 19th century town houses along Bootham, to an award-winning meeting hall and spectacular new Arts Centre. Although a prime city centre site, the grounds are surprisingly spacious. The purpose-built junior school is about a mile away and again, while near the centre of the city, has plenty of space. The ancient City of York is a wonderful place to live, work and be educated.

The Governors are seeking a new Head to lead and develop Bootham beyond its bicentenary, with a strong sense of purpose and vigour. This is an exceptional opportunity for an ambitious and experienced educational leader committed to an independent, Quaker education that challenges the current educational norms, to join the dynamic senior team. The successful candidate will have the strategic vision, drive and energy to shape a flourishing school that is fit for the future.

Interested candidates are warmly invited to contact RSAcademics to arrange a confidential discussion with one of the consultants handling this appointment:

Further information can be found by visiting the RSAcademics website.

Closing date: 10.00 am UK time on Wednesday 18th May 2022.

Bootham School is an equal opportunities employer and is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The appointment is subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks in accordance with the relevant statutory guidance, including an enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references, proof of identity and qualifications, and a satisfactory medical report.

This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the amendments to the Exceptions Order 1975, 2013 and 2020.

The safeguarding responsibilities of this post are detailed in the candidate information brochure.

RSAcademics is committed to the safeguarding and the welfare of children, and to promoting diversity and inclusion in schools.

Bootham School is a leading co-educational day and boarding school located in the beautiful and historic city of York. Set across two sites, it is home to more than 670 students aged 3-19. The senior school occupies 10 acres in the heart of the city, a few minutes walk from York Minster. Bootham Junior School is just over a mile away, on a purpose-built 10-acre site.

Bootham continues to build on its national reputation as a school with a difference and numbers across both schools are at an historic high. Founded by Quaker families, the School values academic rigour and public duty and encourages students to be creative thinkers, peacemakers and confident humanitarians.

Academic standards are strong and leavers gain entry to the UK’s leading universities including Cambridge, Oxford, Durham, UCL, King’s College, Central St. Martin’s and the Royal College of Music. The School also has a well-earned reputation for producing future engineers and students are regular holders of the prestigious Arkwright Scholarship.

The award-winning enrichment programme allows students to choose from more than 100 activities. All teaching staff participate in this programme, and some may lead in sport, the Duke of Edinburgh scheme or on the many local trips and global expeditions which are a feature of Bootham life.

Our staff can expect to enjoy excellent facilities and benefits. We welcome applications from enthusiastic professionals who seek not just a workplace but a community based on dedication, camaraderie, and purpose.
