Are you passionate about helping every child succeed?

Do you want to make a difference to young lives and improve their life chances?

Are you excited by the thought of a school with a strong Christian ethos?

Are you prepared to work collaboratively for the benefit of young people and staff?

Will you offer children the opportunity to experience “life in all its fullness” by doing what it takes, no matter what their starting point or social challenges?

If so, Canon Slade School would love to hear from you!

This is a wonderful opportunity to join our outstanding, outward looking, oversubscribed school and be part of a relatively new and successful Trust. We are looking for a passionate, emotionally intelligent and ambitious Headteacher who inspires students and staff and supports them in making outstanding progress.

If this would be your first Headship or you think it’s a big jump in size from your current post, then we are in a good position to offer you extra support as you transition into this post. As an example, for those with no experience in leading a school of religious character you would be able to complete the one-year Christian Leadership course which can be arranged via the Diocese.

The Post

Canon Slade School are seeking to appoint a Headteacher in this very popular and successful Church of England secondary school of 1,700 students (335 in the Sixth Form) and would welcome applications from existing Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers who are looking to develop their careers in a large 11-18 school.

We are looking to appoint a Headteacher who will lead by example, develop, inspire and motivate their team and be committed to achieving high standards both academically and pastorally.  The candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent leadership, communication and team building skills.  They should be an outstanding classroom practitioner, have enthusiasm for their subject and be capable of teaching across our full age and ability range.  Candidates should be able to demonstrate a proven record of experience and achievement.  A job description and person specification for this post is attached.

The SLT and Governors

Our SLT consists of two Deputy Headteachers, four Assistant Headteachers and two Associate Assistant Headteachers.  The SLT meet twice weekly; once for business and once for strategic planning.  Our line management systems are currently under review.

The Local Governing Board consists of 20 Governors, many of whom are appointed to reflect our Anglican foundation, with Full Board and Committee meetings each half term. The school is also supported by a Charitable Trust which owns our land and manages lettings of school premises and facilities, with funds raised supporting school developments.

Application information

If you are interested in applying, please use the Canon Slade application form which can be downloaded or accessed by clicking ‘apply now’.  This can be emailed to jobs@canon-slade.bolton.sch.uk or sent by post to the school address, marked for the attention of Mrs Karen Hood, HR Officer.  Please send an accompanying letter of no more than two sides of A4 to explain why you are the best candidate for this post and what you would contribute to our school, with examples from your recent work if possible. CVs will not be considered.

We will acknowledge all applications by email.  If you do not hear from the school within two weeks of the closing date, then please assume that your application has been unsuccessful on this occasion.

The school has an Equal Opportunities policy.  If you consider yourself to be disabled, please state the nature of the disability, giving details of how we can accommodate these needs should you be selected for interview and subsequently appointed.

In accordance with the Data Protection Act, the details provided in the application form will be used for selection and interview procedures, and for employment records if your application is successful.  Safer Recruitment practice will be followed at all times.

Selected candidates will be emailed (usually within 48 hours of the closing date) to invite them to interview.  Please note that referees will be contacted at this stage of the process.

Prior to taking up the appointment, the successful candidates will be asked to provide documentary evidence (including National Insurance number) showing their entitlement to work in the UK.  We will also carry out an enhanced DBS and declaration of health check.

Closing date: Monday 17 June at 9.00am

Interview dates:  Tuesday 9 July and Wednesday 10 July 2019

(There will be 3 weeks between the closing date for applications and interviews, due to Chair of Governors’ prior commitments).

School Visits

Our Acting Headteacher, Mr David Lever, will host visits to the school throughout the week commencing 10 June.  If you would like to make an appointment, please telephone Natalie Lenehan, Head’s PA and Clerk to the Governors, on 01204 600844.  If you would like to speak to John Burns, Chair of Governors and Trustee, he will also be very happy to contact you and answer any questions you may have.

In addition, all applicants will be contacted (using the details on your application form) by Mrs Tania Lewyckyj, CEO of The Bishop Fraser Trust, for an informal conversation and to answer any questions you might have on how the school and MAT work collaboratively.

Thank you for your interest.
