Job overview

Canon Slade Church of England High School is an ambitious, caring and popular 11-18 school in Bolton with over 1600 on roll, including 305 in the sixth form. The school has an excellent reputation, is very popular with parents and carers and is hugely respected in the local community and beyond. The school is proud of the wide range of opportunities on offer, ensuring each student is given every opportunity to fulfil their potential. It is now recruiting a new Headteacher who will harness its significant potential and provide the strategic vision and dynamic leadership to drive future improvement.

The school is proud of its Christian ethos and the shared values of compassion and love for one another which allows each individual to grow in a safe, caring community which has high expectations for all. Behaviour and relationships between pupils and staff are excellent and built on mutual respect.

At the heart of the school is a committed and talented staff. New strategies to further improve teaching and learning have provided additional momentum and they are focussed on embedding best practice and providing consistently high quality teaching and learning where all children and young people are challenged to achieve their potential and make the best progress at all times. Staff also value their own professional development and are motivated to work with the new Headteacher and to be a part of the school’s continuing development and success.

This is an exciting time in the school's development as it is currently planning to form a Multi Academy Trust with St James’s CE High School, Farnworth. Further developments of the MAT will see Bolton St Catherine’s Academy join as a sponsored Academy with this process anticipated to be completed by June 2017.

The new Headteacher will retain the same autonomy as previous Heads of Canon Slade with accountability both to Governors of Canon Slade, and working with the CEO of the MAT, to the MAT Trustees, providing the information needed for them to fulfil their duties in improving the outcomes in all schools in this partnership. This is an outstanding opportunity to join a new MAT and to shape the way these relationships work for the good of the pupils.

This is a pivotal time for the school and the Governing Body, while recognising the many challenges that lie ahead, are looking to appoint a new Headteacher who shares their excitement and who can harness the many strengths of the school, leading it to a confident and successful future. If you are a full and active member of a church in membership of, or sharing the statement of belief of, Churches Together in England this is an outstanding opportunity to drive improvement and create a vision for the future that engages students, staff, parents/carers and the wider community.

You must be an experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available. Applicants must be highly motivated, driven, and have an in-depth knowledge of excellence in secondary education, a commitment to high quality teaching and learning and should not only have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are achieved. You will need a ‘can-do’ attitude that inspires and engages students, parents/carers and staff alike. You must display compassion, be familiar with holding staff to account and also being accountable for outcomes. Fundamental to your educational philosophy is a conviction that every decision you make should be focused on improving the learning and developing the potential of each student in your care.
