Job overview

Varndean School is seeking to recruit a Headteacher following the retirement of our current Head.

Varndean is an 11-16 maintained, comprehensive school with around 1400 students, set in a picturesque south coast location in the vibrant and diverse city of Brighton and Hove.

Rated Good by Ofsted (2017), Varndean on most measures achieved the best results in Brighton and Hove in 2019. We are over-subscribed and growing.

Our ethos is rooted in the belief that providing a caring and supportive environment for our students is crucial to the achievement of academic success. This is delivered through our Five Schools system: five smaller schools within one larger school, each the size of a primary school, providing emotional and pastoral support.

Also key to Varndean’s ethos is our broad and diverse curriculum offering. Our aim is to enable students to achieve their potential in whatever sphere they aspire to or excel in.

Our vision is for Varndean to deliver World Class Learning to all our students.

Varndean equally recognises the importance of helping its staff achieve their full potential, and encourages their continuous professional development. It is notable for example that four previous deputy headteachers have moved to substantive headteacher posts and one to become CEO of a Multi Academy Trust.

Varndean School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Similarly we pay close attention to protecting the health and safety of our staff and students.

Applications are invited from candidates with substantial experience of senior leadership in a secondary school with the dynamism and charisma to lead us to achieving our World Class vision, by building on our successes and ethos.

Salary scale: L33 – 39 (£92,624 - £106,176).

Starting date: 1 September 2021

Closing date for applications: 09:00 on 16 April

Varndean School has a proud history. It has undergone many changes to bring it to where it is now; starting life in the centre of Brighton in 1884 and moving to its current site in 1926. Since then the school has evolved into a vibrant and diverse co-education comprehensive school with a population of over 1400 students and nearly 200 staff which represents the local community it serves.

Varndean School is a place where people matter. We believe that individuality is very much an internal quality that we foster and encourage through the widest variety of learning experiences.

Our broad curriculum promotes academic rigour so that our students can stand shoulder to shoulder with their peers nationally. Varndean is one of the top performing secondary schools in Brighton and Hove. We are committed to creativity and have a huge passion for music, performance, the arts, sport and anything that challenges and encourages participation.

Our opportunities for extended learning are second to none with our arts provision, successful sports teams, the largest cohorts of DofE in the South East as well as our extensive enrichment and entitlement curriculum. We are the first state school in Brighton and Hove to become a  Directly Licensed Centre for DofE.

Varndean is a great place to learn and develop, in friendly, smaller and supportive environments. We are a really happy school where student relationships with each other, and staff, are excellent. We have a well established smaller school system each with its own identity: Angelou, Russell, Turing, Ellis and Lennox. Each school has a Head of School, a Deputy Head and a School Leader.

We have the highest aspirations for all of our students supported by highly trained and motivated experts in their fields. Our staff are the mainstay of our community. We provide huge opportunities for professional development and have a history of real success in creating visionary leaders and excellent practitioners. As working parents, partners and professionals, our Senior Leadership Team understand the stresses and pressures of professional life and our inherent Wellbeing Programme evidences our commitment to our staff as people, not just employees.

Varndean is set in a beautiful landscape overlooking the sea, at the heart of the vibrant and diverse Brighton lifestyle. We relish the cultural and creative opportunities that our city has to offer and we give back just as much in return.

Varndean is a school going places; we are not resting on our laurels. We look at every aspect of what we do and reflect on how to make our professional practice, our learning and our environment better. Ours is an exciting journey and we would be delighted if you would like to join us.
