Pilgrim Pathways School is an outstanding local authority maintained alternative provision providing education for children and young people during their stay in hospital, offering a rich and broad curriculum to pupils from Early Years to Post-16 in a personalised, nurturing and supportive environment for both students and their families. Every student has unique learning needs, interests and abilities so we provide an individual programme or pathway for every student alongside support to move to the next stage in their education. Transition is a key feature of our offer – both on admission and discharge – and necessitating close and multi-disciplinary working with a wide professional network.

We are seeking an exceptional educational practitioner with the ability and ambition to lead the school into the next significant phase of its journey and the development in the new Cambridge Children’s Hospital. The head will develop the high quality of education and care provided, whilst successfully navigating a challenging landscape in a complex innovative multi-site provision. It is an opportunity to develop new models of multi-disciplinary and build upon an excellent reputation, work closely with other schools. It involves a commitment to collaboration and extend links with agencies, partners and stakeholders.

Working with the Senior and Extended Leadership Team the Headteacher will ensure the highest safeguarding practice standards are maintained and that there is a strong focus on delivering a high quality of education and a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum. This position is a permanent role to start at the appropriate time in 2023.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a good understanding of SEND and  the SEND code of practice, the National Curriculum and relevant external accreditations and their application to young people with special needs
  • Have significant experience in leading teams and managing workloads that are broad and diverse in nature
  • Be able to support staff and other stakeholders with EHCP applications and activate other relevant support
  • Be committed to keeping all children safe
  • Promote the school’s and vision and have consistently high expectations of all
  • Have experience of working with children and young people with complex mental and physical health needs and have a sound understanding of the impact that these can have on children’s learning and pedagogical approaches which support them to engage with learning
  • Be approachable, understanding and emotionally committed to the welfare of pupils and staff
  • Have a thorough understanding of school performance measures and strategic financial planning
  • Have a sound knowledge of current educational legislation, policy and guidance particularly within the context of SEND
  • Be committed to working together in partnership with all stakeholders and partner agencies involved in the life of the school;
  • Have proven senior leadership experience, with the ability to lead an educational team working in a multi-disciplinary context.
  • Have experience of the Ofsted inspection framework and school self-evaluation processes.
