Salary: L21 – L27

Location: Cheddar, Somerset

Full time.  Permanent

Job starts: 1 September 2018

Fairlands Middle School is part of the successful Mendip Edge Federation, set in the beautiful Cheddar Valley, Somerset.  The Governors, staff and community are extremely sorry to see our highly respected and successful Headteacher leave but excited about the opportunities which lie ahead under new leadership.

We have 458 pupils on roll (boys and girls aged between 9 and 13), an engaged Governing Body and committed staff including a supportive senior leadership group. We aim high in our progress and achievement data yet the safe, caring and inspiring culture we promote encourages children to benefit from wider learning experiences and grow in confidence and self-esteem. It is about the whole child and the whole school community.

Our Federation was established in 2014 and is going from strength to strength. As well as Fairlands Middle School, the Mendip Edge Federation incorporates three feeder first schools in Cheddar, Shipham and Draycott & Rodney Stoke.  Collaboration between headteachers, teaching staff and support teams allows us to benefit from shared good practice and economies of scale. Internal partnerships have improved progress during the transition between schools, which we are delighted has recently been recognised at a national level for cross-phase work. Our relationships with other schools more widely across the Cheddar Valley are also effective and invaluable.

Please have a look at our application pack and we encourage you to look at the school’s web site wwwfairlandsmiddleschool.co.uk and contact us to arrange a visit.

Please return completed applications to DAndrews1@educ.somerset.gov.uk

About Fairlands Middle School

Fairlands Middle School is a mainstream, state, community secondary middle school for girls and boys aged 9-13. It is located in Cheddar, Somerset.

Fairlands Middle School is part of the Cheddar Valley family of schools, comprising nine first schools, two middle schools and The Kings of Wessex Academy, to which the majority of Fairlands pupils transfer for Year 9. In 2014, Fairlands joined forces with three first schools to form the Mendip Edge Federation, with a single governing body working across all four schools.

Fairlands Middle School’s aim is for its pupils to learn to their full potential, growing as young people as they prepare for the next stages in their education. The school provides a secure environment to encourage this and help develop strong self-esteem.

Ofsted report

“The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection. The headteacher, alongside other leaders and governors, are highly ambitious and communicate a ‘can do’ attitude to both staff and pupils. Staff and pupils understand what is expected of them and work tirelessly to be successful. The school is a calm and purposeful place. Pupils are overwhelmingly positive about their school and wear the uniform with pride; pupils look smart and arrive at school well prepared to learn. Classrooms are stimulating learning environments where pupils benefit from strong working relationships with staff and each other.”
