Job overview

A brand new Academy will be opening in the Hinckley and Bosworth area in September 2020. This is a Presumption Free School and will open as part of a local Academy Trust. The new Academy Free school will be a special school for children and young people who have communication and interaction difficulties aged 8-19 (key stages 2 - 5). It will ultimately provide education for 80 pupils. The school will open in a brand new purpose built building. The curriculum will respond to the individual needs of pupils, assisting them to build strategies to minimise the barriers to their learning, enabling them to access a mainstream curriculum within an adapted, nurturing, structured and supportive learning environment.

The Academy Trust is seeking to recruit a dynamic, innovative leader who will help lead the school from planning phase to full operation and beyond.  As headteacher designate you need to be committed and have the necessary vision to create an outstanding school. The journey will be supported by the Chief Executive Officer of this newly forming multi academy trust, who is currently the Headteacher of Dorothy Goodman School, Hinckley.

You will be skilled in working collaboratively with stakeholders at all levels to maximise the educational and social opportunities available for children and young people. You will need to have an excellent track record as a leader who has enabled positive outcomes for children and young people regardless of their needs or background. Experience of working with learners with communication and interaction difficulties would obviously be beneficial.  You may be a serving Headteacher/Principal or a successful senior leader looking for your first whole school leadership role.

The free school is the second school of a newly developing Multi Academy Trust sponsored by Dorothy Goodman School.

The closing date for applications is 29 November 2019 3:00pm

Interviews will take place during week beginning 9th December 2019

Dorothy Goodman is a generic Area Special School located on five sites in Hinckley. The School provides education for pupils aged 3 -19 with a wide range of disabilities including pupils with severe, profound and multiple learning needs, moderate learning difficulties and pupils with Autism, who may be functioning at high levels academically. We also work with young people who have significant challenging behaviour and with those who have severe medical needs. Candidates need to be prepared to adopt a problem-solving approach to the challenges that these young people bring.

What is significant in allowing us to work effectively as a school,is our ethos and our overall individual approach to learning needs. In order to be able to do this we employ a large number of teaching and support staff. There is a great deal of experience within the staff team, for example expertise in Autism, Healthcare Needs and Challenging Behaviour. There are excellent Professional Development opportunities available to help staff gain any necessary skills in these areas, but all members of staff need a commitment to our overall ethos and approach.

All staff are appointed to the School as a whole and need to be willing to work across the curriculum and in any phase.
