Job overview

A unique Headship opportunity in the heart of Devon

St Sidwell’s is a happy and successful city-centre school where children of all abilities make good progress and the distinctive multi-ethnic pupil population enriches everyone’s learning experience.

We are looking for a new and ambitious Headteacher to lead the school to become exceptional, providing an inspiring, creative and loving environment in which all our children will thrive.

You should be warm and outgoing with vision, creativity and enthusiasm. You will inspire, engage and empower staff, children, parents and community partners, embrace change and be able to create and deliver a strategy to achieve an ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted judgement.

You will have an unstinting focus on supporting improvement for each and every one of our children and be able to draw insights from your ability to interpret and utilise performance and financial data in doing so.

You will ensure our staff and our children achieve their full potential by maintaining a knowledge of the latest evidence on effective practice and its application, having an appreciation of how technology can enhance learning and by creating synergy through partnership with other schools and organisations.

We will be looking to you to create an amazing and supportive learning environment. You should come with a vision of how to capitalise on the diversity of nationalities in the school that will ensure that all of our children feel nurtured and included.

As a practicing Christian, you should have clarity about how you will lead, extend and apply the school’s Christian ethos to make our school a wonderful place in which to learn and work for those of all faiths and of no faith.

If you can offer all this, have a passion for learning and want to lead a school to be proud of, we would love to hear from you.

If you decide to apply for this exciting post the Governors ask that you respond to the following questions (as suggested subheadings) as part of your supporting statement, with reference to the criteria listed in the person specification:

  • What attracts you to this role?
  • What is your understanding of the role of a Headteacher in a modern primary school?
  • How would you achieve a consistency of outstanding practice in all areas across the school?
  • What recent experience have you had of leading strategic development?
  • What proven strengths do you have that would support this role?
  • How would you nurture and include children of all faiths and of no faith within our Christian ethos?
  • What do you perceive to be your immediate development needs?
