Job overview

Governors seek to appoint an exceptional Leader, with the vision, ability and confidence to build upon the outstanding legacy of our current Headteacher, enabling students to achieve the highest levels of academic and personal achievement.

We do not believe that Sedgefield Community College is an ‘ordinary ’school, rather we are confident that we present our students with an outstanding experience that is far from the norm. An experience that has led the school to consistently feature amongst the highest performing of all secondary schools across North East and Cumbria whilst also being judged by OFSTED (2017) as ‘outstanding’. However, at Sedgefield, success is not and will not be measured by academic outcomes alone. Rather, it will always be measured by the extent to which students are empowered to move onto the next stage of their lives as happy, confident and successful young adults. Indeed, to become Headteacher at Sedgefield Community College is to acknowledge and accept that the happiness and wellbeing of our students, in the broadest sense, is at the heart of what we do each day.  It is to understand that a prerequisite to employment is an unyielding determination to remove barriers and personalise support for each and every child regardless of the challenges.

The successful candidate will benefit from working in a welcoming, caring school which exudes positivity, leading an outstanding team of committed, supportive and dedicated staff and governors who are proud to be part of the school community. From this strong foundation, the person appointed will be expected to not only demonstrate an ability to professionally challenge and support, but also to continue to nourish a positive organisational culture founded upon common values, professional respect and the belief that everyday should be enjoyed.

This is a fantastic opportunity for experienced Headteachers, with a proven track record, to further develop their career and impact positively upon the development of our school. Whilst we also welcome applications from talented and aspirational Deputy Headteachers who can demonstrate they are ready and able to take on the responsibilities and demands of headship successfully.

Applicants should complete an application form and indicate through a letter (no more than two sides of A4) how their experience to date has prepared them for this role and how they would ensure future success.

As a disability confident employer, we are committed to employing disabled people and people with health conditions, making reasonable adjustments to support disabled applicants when required.  Applicants with disabilities will be invited for interview if the essential job criteria are met.

The Governing Body is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.  Any offer of employment will be subject to receipt of a satisfactory enhanced DBS Disclosure form.

Application forms and an information pack are available from and returnable to The Corporate Director of Children and Young People’s Services, c/o the School and Governor Support Service, Children and Young People’s Services, County Hall, Durham. DH1 5UJ, or email SGSS.Administration@durham.gov.uk

Named in the Sunday Times list of the UK's top 50 schools (11 to 16),  Sedgefield Community College is now firmly established as one of North England’s consistently highest performing schools, with a reputation for outstanding and creative teaching and learning allied with strong, successful leadership. Whilst we are proud of our reputation as a highly successful school, as measured by its examination performance, we also take immense pride in the reputation we have for developing outstanding teachers and leaders.

In March 2017, Sedgefield was subject to an OFSTED inspection and as a result judged to be outstanding in all respects, however this significant achievement did not signal the end of the school’s commitment to achieving ever improving standards in all aspects of its work, rather it has merely acted as the catalyst for further progress.

Our student's attitudes to learning are excellent, with OFSTED going so far as to describe student conduct as ‘impeccable’. The high standard of care and support we provide our students has over time created a tangible bond between students and staff and as a result relationships between adults and students are such that we can confidently describe our students as welcoming, respectful and thoughtful and Sedgefield as a ‘happy’ school.

Having moved into our stunning new school building in 2011, we recognise how fortunate we are to have such a superb learning environment and the facilities that it provides. Whilst an impressive building does not necessarily equate to an outstanding school it certainly plays its part in supporting the culture of high standards and excellence that permeates everything that we do.
