Applications are invited from practising and committed Catholics for the post of Headteacher at Cardinal Hume Catholic School, to lead the school in the next exciting phase in its development. Cardinal Hume is an extremely popular, high-achieving, successful and happy school, rated Outstanding by Ofsted in two consecutive judgements in 2008 and 2014. The school enjoys an excellent reputation and is consistently ranked as one of the highest performing teaching schools, and lead school in the oversubscribed Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. 

At Cardinal Hume, our distinct Catholic ethos, high standards of discipline and commitment to every member of our school community makes this a truly special place to learn. We are also responsible for the spiritual, moral and character formation of the young people in our care. This is a responsibility that we take very seriously in our mission to form well-rounded citizens who are ready for the wider, 21st century world. Cardinal Hume have established a national reputation for excellence, success and high standards as was highlighted in the Chief Inspector for Schools 2014 annual report for its outstanding work with the country's most disadvantaged children. The school was awarded World Class School status in 2019 and is a cutting-edge Hub school in both Computing and Modern Foreign Languages.

We became an academy in 2012, and a Multi Academy Trust in 2016. Since 2019, we have been part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust, a family of 5 secondary schools and 8 primary schools from across Gateshead, Sunderland, Durham and Northumberland, in the west of the Diocese. The Trust will expand to 22 schools by the end of 2020 and reach a total of 48 schools by 2022. The Headteacher in post at Cardinal Hume Catholic School will be an important part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust Secondary Headteachers Group and will benefit from the support of the Trust and Chief Executive Officer.

Cardinal Hume Catholic School is a mixed, non-selective, Roman Catholic academy with sixth form in Tyne and Wear, serving students from the age of 11 up to 18. The school, situated in Gateshead, has over 1500 students on roll. It belongs to the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese and is part of the Bishop Wilkinson Catholic Education Trust. The school was identified as Outstanding by Ofsted in 2014 and by the Hexham and Newcastle Diocese in 2019.

Cardinal Hume Catholic School’s aim is to develop student’s knowledge of the Catholic faith in a loving and caring learning environment. The Gateshead secondary academy wishes for students to expand their minds and be equipped with the necessary skills, attitudes, knowledge and concepts to succeed. It hopes for students to sustain high academic standards throughout their years in school. The school’s vision is for students to achieve to the highest of their capabilities in light of the Christian teachings and the Gospel values. Cardinal Hume Catholic School has the motto: “Fide, labore, caritate – In faith, hard work and kindness”, and installs this ethos throughout daily school life. Students have the opportunity to extend their experiences beyond the classroom through a wide range of extra-curricular activities, including art club, the debating society, music lessons, our outdoor adventure programme and the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Moreover, the school has an excellent reputation for its sports teams and their successes over many years.

Cardinal Hume Catholic School has an excellent local and national reputation. It has been awarded World Class School status, is a successful Teaching School and is also a successful regional Hub School in both Computing and Modern Foreign Languages.
