This is a unique opportunity for an exceptional Headteacher to join The Westgate School, Hampshire’s first All-Through school, as it embarks on the next phase of its exciting journey.

The Westgate’s award-winning Lower School building opened three years ago as an addition to the existing over-subscribed  secondary school and thriving nursery on the same site. In 2017-18 years R-3 will be filled (two form entry) joining years 7-11 (eight form entry) in the upper school, to make a total of 1440 pupils on roll.

The school is dedicated to enabling all of its pupils, in all five Key Stages, to achieve their full academic and personal potential, and for all pupils to make the best possible progress regardless of previous achievement. This is borne out in an excellent record of attainment and progress throughout the school.  The Westgate was judged Good overall at a recent (December 2016) Ofsted inspection, and Outstanding in several categories:

“The leadership of early years foundation stage is exemplary”

“In Year 2 there is strong mastery in Mathematics for the most able”

“Due to the strong outcomes at the end of Key Stage 4 pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education”

“The school’s work to promote pupils’ personal development and welfare is outstanding”

The governors now wish to appoint an exceptional and inspirational Headteacher to continue this work, in partnership with the strong Senior Leadership Team and highly motivated colleagues. The Westgate has established a caring and supportive culture of “high expectation without fear”, and all are empowered to grow as professionals and in leadership capacity. It has excellent and productive partnerships with other local schools as well as a supportive and enthusiastic governing body.

The successful candidate will share the school’s vision that is set out in our Strategic Principles, in which safeguarding and welfare is a priority, high quality teaching is an expectation and all pupils and colleagues demonstrate courage, determination, resilience and teamwork underpinned by a Growth Mindset philosophy.

The school comprises several contemporary and more traditional buildings and is situated in a pleasant residential area within the ancient city of Winchester.  Facilities include a modern health and fitness suite and free parking on site, as well as a purpose-built nursery.

The Westgate School and Hampshire County Council are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. We will ensure that all our recruitment and selection practices reflect this commitment. All successful candidates will be subject to Disclosure and Barring Service checks along with other relevant employment checks.

Application Procedure:  Visits to the school prior to application are warmly welcomed. Please contact c.peverell@westgate.hants.sch.uk or telephone Caroline Peverell, Headteacher’s PA: 01962 857311

As a thriving and very successful learning community, The Westgate continues to build on its history of academic excellence and outstanding individual pupil progress. Along side this we develop confident, resourceful individuals high in self esteem. Exemplary pastoral care is something we pride ourselves on. We are proud that The Westgate is a happy school where pupils and teachers enjoy learning together. A talented team of colleagues year on year provide all pupils with the best possible opportunities in a range of subject areas - both inside and outside of the classroom. Working in partnership with parents and the local community is important to us. Supporting our curriculum provision is a comprehensive extra curricular and enrichment programme; pupils are encouraged to attend a wide range of field trips, educational visits and after school clubs. We have a proud tradition in musical, sporting and performing arts enrichment which we celebrate in our school.

We are pleased and excited to have become Hampshire’s first 4-16 all through school. At The Westgate, we enjoy working closely with our partner primary schools and consider a change of status to be a superb opportunity to strengthen our links to an even greater extent. We already take opportunities to share expertise in teaching and learning, enabling us to ensure that pupils joining our school experience a smooth transition from Year 6 to Year 7 that builds on their success. Moreover, the development of our own Lower School means that we can work in closer partnership with our local primary schools, providing specialist teaching in subjects such as Modern Foreign Languages and Physical Education.

The Westgate Nursery marks the beginning of the Early Years Foundation Stage and we are proud of the high quality provision that children experience in this fantastic setting. Led by a talented team and supported by specialist teachers, your child will experience a rich learning environment in The Westgate Nursery, providing a solid foundation for future learning. We are a reflective school and constantly review our practice to ensure further improvement. Collaboration with parents, learning together to ensure every pupil in our care reaches their full potential, is highly valued and a hallmark of The Westgate.
