Job overview

Due to the retirement of our current long serving Headteacher, we have an exciting opportunity to offer to a strong, inspiring, forward thinking individual to lead our school from its current strong and successful performance, through its next phases of development and growth. We strive to inspire our children to dream big, be extraordinary and change the world.

Ashfield is a two-form entry Voluntary Controlled Junior School in Bushey, catering for children between the ages of seven and eleven with an admission limit of 60 for each year group. As established by the original trustees, the school has no religious affiliation with any denomination and was founded by voluntary subscription in 1845 for the education of the people of the town. Our school vision is:

  • To inspire, challenge and support our children so that they become confident, co-operative, lifelong learners who can achieve their full potential
  • To create a secure, stable and happy environment where learning is inspirational
  • To teach and guide children by being a good role model
  • To develop citizens of the community and the wider world who have a strong sense of right and wrong, who value themselves, other people and their environment.
  • To promote a school culture where we listen to each other, work supportively as a team; and develop children’s independence and love of learning so that we can be the best that we can be.

Following a full Ofsted Inspection in March 2012, Ashfield was awarded a ‘good’ rating and this was maintained during a further short inspection in 2017. The school is fully committed to continuous improvement and we are incredibly proud of the ongoing achievements of our children.

We are looking for:

  • An innovative and dynamic leader with the ability to motivate and inspire others through effective delegation
  • A leader who will maintain and enhance the positive ethos of the school.
  • An individual who knows what excellence looks like and can lead and inspire us in the next phase of our school’s development.
  • A leader who can work with us to build our whole learning community.
  • An efficient communicator who can build rapport with children, parents, staff and governors.
  • An individual who is willing to lead the school in technological improvements.
  • An individual who is able to manage a challenging budget.

In return, we can offer you:

  • A happy, safe, welcoming and healthy environment where children learn whilst being respected and valued.
  • A dedicated, motivated and positive staff team who are keen to embrace new ideas whilst strengthening the quality of teaching, learning and wellbeing.
  • An exciting new challenge to lead Ashfield Junior School on its continuing journey towards sustained excellence
  • The opportunity to build on relationships with parents and the local community.
  • The opportunity to join an open-minded Governing Body who will support the development of the school and Head teacher.

Our School

Ashfield is a two form entry Voluntary Controlled Junior School, catering for children between the ages of seven and eleven with an admission limit of 60 for each year group. It is situated in Bushey, a village which lies on the outskirts of Watford. As established by the original trustees, the school has no religious affiliation to the Church and was founded by voluntary subscription in 1845 for the education of the people of Bushey. Admission is for children of all abilities, primarily from our main feeder school, Merryhill Infants, which is linked to Ashfield by the Local Education Authority Admission Policy.

Ashfield has expanded over its 150 year history. The original 1845 classrooms are still in use by our year 6 children. These large, light, classrooms provide a good space for our oldest children. A resource area is located between the two classes provides a pleasant room for staff to take their PPA time. Our ICT suite is also located in this part of the building. It houses 15 computers. Every class has timetabled access to its use.

Our Hall was built in the 1970s and is used for assemblies, drama, gymnastics and indoor games. Off this room is the dining room, a beautiful library, which ahs recently been refurbished and the “little room” which is used for music tuition and teaching of small groups. The year 3 and year 5 classrooms are also in this part of the building. The year 4 classrooms are in a separate building to the side of the playground.

Ashfield is fortunate in having two hard play areas. The large upper playground leads to a large expanse of grass. This is suitable for more boisterous games, while the lower playground has been landscaped. In the summer months the field is set out with picnic tables which provide an area for children to eat their lunch outdoors when the weather is warm and fine.

The school also has a pond and meadow area which is a haven for interesting wildlife and greatly enhances the children’s environmental studies.
