Job overview

The Governors of Headfort School are looking for a successor to Kevin Allwright who came out of retirement on a temporary basis to re-found our outstanding school. After exceptional service as headteacher, reopening our school during the global pandemic, recruiting and leading our small team of highly talented staff and securing the future of the school, Kevin is returning home. We are looking for an outstanding educational leader who can take Headfort into the future.

Founded at Headfort House in 1949 by Lord and Lady Headfort, and re-founded in 2020 by the Headfort Trust, Headfort School is a non-denominational day and boarding school for boys and girls aged 4-13. We are situated in stunning parkland just outside the ancient town of Kells, County Meath, Ireland. We provide an outstanding all-round education centered on individuality and academic excellence. Our setting allows a happy and unrushed childhood, encouraging a broad approach to learning while ensuring that every child can perform to the best of their academic ability. We have small classes and a unique curriculum developed with a focus on the stage and ability of each student which includes the core subjects of the Irish national curriculum as well as the Common Entrance curriculum.

The headteacher will lead Headfort School, reporting to the Board of the Headfort Trust. The successful candidate will be an exceptional educational leader with a strong vision for Headfort, an impressive track record and a commitment to delivering outstanding academic and co-curricular programmes and pastoral care. This is a rare opportunity for a candidate to nurture a small, historic school and to shape our future with the support of a passionate community of parents, pupils and staff.

First-class communication skills, a strong sense of mission, a deep empathy with the values and ethos of the school, including its boarding and international aspects, and the flexibility to adapt to a fast-changing educational landscape will be prerequisites.

Specific requirements:

  • Legally authorized to work in Ireland
  • Min. 8 years of Primary/Secondary Education experience
  • Desirable 4 years of School Leadership experience
