Job overview

Gentleness, hope, dignity, justice, companionship and excellence

Governors are seeking to appoint a Headteacher who can continue to build on the many successes of Bellerive FCJ Catholic College, grow student numbers in the sixth form and ensure that we deliver the best educational opportunities for each student from Year 7-13.

Bellerive FCJ is a highly successful all-girls academy with a sixth form, built on strong foundations and commitment to mission. Situated in Liverpool adjacent to the beautiful Sefton Park, it serves students from across the city and beyond which adds to the richness of the school community. Staff are committed to excellent standards for all students and strive to ensure that each individual achieves their maxim potential both personally and academically. Bellerive is a community strong in companionship where the unique gifts of every person are recognised, nourished, celebrated. The vacancy has arisen following the resignation of our Headteacher following five years of successful leadership at the school.

Our aim is to follow the vision of Marie Madeleine d’Houet, the foundress of the Faithful Companions of Jesus, who was a woman of inspiration and courage, constantly searching to do good for others. For over 170 years Bellerive FCJ has been educating girls in Liverpool to do this. We strive to instil in our students a zest for life, and a desire to use their talents and gifts in the service of others: indeed, in 2021, Ofsted commented that “Staff and students practise the school’s values: excellence, companionship, dignity, justice, hope and gentleness”.

Bellerive FCJ is a community where young people are given a clear vision for life, a vision which is rooted in the person and teachings of Jesus Christ, and which is faithful to the mission of the Catholic Church. Bellerive FCJ belongs to networks within Liverpool, but also cooperates with local schools including other high performing Catholic Schools. Bellerive FCJ is also part of the FCJ family. The school is full of confident, creative, and fulfilled young people and staff and we seek an inspirational leader to work with Governors, the FCJ Educational Trust and the wider community to enable our young people to thrive and ensure the school’s ongoing contribution and commitment to the Church’s mission of education.

The appointed candidate will:

  • Be a practising Catholic, who will strive to uphold and develop strong spiritual and moral values throughout the whole school and wider community.
  • Be a highly collaborative strategic leader with an ability to engage with a range of internal and external partners to further enhance school improvement.
  • Be an inspirational leader with a clear vision for the future of the school, building on its current success.
  • Be committed to professional development for self and others.
  • Lead by example, with a ‘can-do’ attitude that inspires commitment from students, staff and the local community.
  • Have unrelenting drive to ensure all students achieve and a continuous focus on narrowing the gap.
  • Have a proven track record of raising standards in teaching and learning, resulting in measurable whole school improvement, within an aspirational, caring and accountable ethos.
  • Be aware of the wider educational landscape and the challenges this brings in terms of finance and change, including the multi academy trust agenda.

Bellerive Catholic College is a popular and oversubscribed school. The latest OFSTED inspection, October 2021, graded Bellerive as Good. Located in a pleasant area of the city, adjacent to two parks, the college is a non selective school for girls, with boys admitted to the sixth form. The intake is from over 60 primary schools throughout the city and beyond.

The college has benefited from significant capital expenditure, including a new Sixth Form block and excellent new teaching facilities.  New science laboratories, ICT and Technology facilities opened in September 2017, together with a new Sports Hall.

The school performs above the national average in a number of measures.
