Job overview

Based in a newly refurbished building on the Isle of Wight, the Island Learning Centre provides educational opportunities for 5 – 16 year olds who require an alternative education; are at risk of exclusion; permanently excluded; emotionally vulnerable or medically unwell. It serves the whole of the Island and is a key resource in shaping alternative education for vulnerable students from its partner primary and secondary schools. The Centre provides both in-reach and out-reach support opportunities for KS1 to KS4 learners, whilst working collaboratively with each young person’s home school. The Centre also liaises with a wide range of alternative providers, allowing all its students to engage fully in many diverse activities that support the core curriculum of the Centre.

The Management Committee is seeking to appoint an exceptional candidate who:

  • Has a clear vision, strong leadership and effective management skills
  • Understands the needs of vulnerable young people and their families
  • Has experience of working with young people who can present challenging behaviour and uses a consistent and fair approach
  • Has experience of partnerships working to achieve successful outcomes
  • Has experience and sound understanding of budget management
  • Has a strong vision for the future, an entrepreneurial flair and an understanding of the new direction of Education Centres (Pupil Referral Units) within commissioning frameworks/partnerships
