Job overview

If you are a leader who is ambitious, inspirational and committed to excellence then this appointment will present you with a unique opportunity.

Gladstone Road Primary School in Scarborough is on a transformational journey, and as the largest primary school (777 on roll) within North Yorkshire it plays a pivotal role across the area both in terms of teaching and learning and progress and outcomes.

Although currently rated as ‘Requires Improvement’ by Ofsted (2017), as a school we have made steady improvements in raising expectations, the quality of teaching and learning on offer and professional development opportunities for our staff.

In many ways this is a career enhancing opportunity for a visionary and experienced school leader who is looking to build on solid foundations and make sure Gladstone Road is at the heart of educational change, as we tackle social mobility together on the North Yorkshire Coast.

Our ambition, and yours, will be that Gladstone Road becomes a centre of excellence both within primary education and for promoting the latest developments in teaching, learning and inclusion practices.  Our children, who are taken from a broad catchment area, deserve an education that will change their lives and give them the opportunity to fulfil their potential, and in turn you and your staff will enjoy a fulfilling career, releasing your potential and maximising your impact.

Our opportunity

We are looking for a Headteacher who has strong leadership skills, who can galvanise our staff, parents, children and community to achieve their very best, through shaping and delivering an inspiring vision which will then lead to significant impact across outcomes, curriculum delivery and teaching and learning.

You will inherit a school which has stable staffing, a strong community ethos and colleagues who are proud to work for a school which puts the whole child and parental engagement at its very heart.

Aspiration, resilience and the ability to build positive and trusting relationships will be in your character as a leader, as you build on a culture of learning and ambition that will see our children develop, grow and contribute an active part in today’s society.

All stakeholders are firm in their view that Gladstone Road has an incredibly bright outlook.  We recognise the challenges and opportunities our school community faces serving a coastal area.  The targeted and cohesive support provided by the Local Authority, the Governing Board and the delivery of specialist and targeted projects through the DFE North Yorkshire Coast Opportunity Area all mean that support is in place for this crucial and unique appointment of our next Headteacher.

We can offer you:

  • Significant levels of support from both the Local Authority, Governing Board and a staff team who are experienced, committed and passionate about our school.
  • An opportunity to see the huge potential that exists here and with clear support, tenacity, energy and the time to make Gladstone Road a beacon of excellence in primary education.
  • A Scarborough community which through the Scarborough Teaching Alliance and DFE Opportunity agenda has come together to share best practice and by working together on early years, primary and secondary education projects means that we will make a tangible difference to the social mobility agenda.
  • Relocation assistance and competitive remuneration package.
  • A commitment from the Governing Body to keep the pay range under review to ensure high performance can be fully rewarded.

We are part of the North Yorkshire Opportunity Area that is prioritising improvements to education and numeracy and literacy outcomes, alongside a drive to recruit and retain high-quality, motivated teachers to the area.  Teachers on the North Yorkshire Coast will have unique opportunities to engage in additional professional and leadership development through this programme, as well as access to fully-funded national professional qualifications.
