Job overview

A headteacher is required for Southern International School (SIH) in Hat Yai, Southern Thailand, to start in August 2023 (an earlier start is possible). The current headteacher will unfortunately be returning to the UK due to family illness and therefore an opportunity has arisen for a new experienced leader to join the school.

SIH is young, small, ambitious and rapidly growing international school with around 150 students aged 2-18. We are an accredited examination centre for Cambridge International Examinations and received the ISQM Silver accreditation through the Education Development Trust (EDT) in June 2019.  We are also the first whole school with nursery in Thailand to be awarded the 'Quality Counts' mark at Platinum level, the highest possible level by the National Day Nurseries Association, (NDNA).

We follow the EYFS in Early Years and have adopted the learning through play and inquiry method. In the Primary school students are taught using a combination of the UK National Curriculum, and the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). In Secondary we follow the Cambridge International Curriculum leading to IGCSES in Year 11. Our latest cohort of students received a 100% pass rate in these exams. This is also the first year that we are offering AS/A Levels to our new Year 12/13 classes.

SIH is a happy school. We were deemed ‘Outstanding’ for Students’ Personal Development and Relationships with our Community in the inspection. We are also incredibly resilient and have weathered extremely challenging times during COVID-19, emerging stronger and healthier while preserving all the qualities that make SIH the first choice for parents in the region.

The Board is looking for a leader to take the school onto the next stage of its development, while keeping the strong commitment to SIH family values and high level of professionalism amongst its staff.

The post will suit an experienced Head of school who has experience of taking a school through an accreditation process (due in 2025) and experience of an International education environment. Our new leader will have exceptional drive to deliver positive educational outcomes and the ability to ensure the culture is high performing, inclusive and caring. You should enjoy a challenge and realise what an amazing opportunity this is. If you can lead with empathy, develop others, have high expectations of staff, students and yourself, then this job is for you.

This is a non-teaching role, however, there may be times when you expected to support colleagues, such as exam invigilation or cover.

The headteacher will:

• Model a culture of excellence while promoting a collaborative and caring atmosphere

• Assure the highest academic standards

• Be the clear leader in delivering the school’s strategic plan

• Ensure that the students have the best teachers

• Work passionately to achieve the school’s vision and mission

• Lead us through the next accreditation process due to take place in 2025

We want a leader who has:

• Highly developed leadership and communication skills

• An abundance of energy, empathy, initiative, vision and drive.

• A sense of humour and ‘can-do’ attitude.

• A keen understanding and promoter of wellbeing for students and staff

• Cross–cultural awareness and ability to impact the school community by being engaging and visible

• A passion for 21st century learning

• The personality and integrity to act as an ambassador for the school

Shortlisted candidates will be given access to the school's current Self Review Document (SRD).

You are advised to look at our websiteFacebook page  or Instagram page to get a better idea of our school and its culture.

We will contact your referees unless you specify otherwise. Shortlisted candidates will be sent more details including the current staff handbook.

NOTE: We reserve the right to interview and offer to a strong candidate prior to the closing date. It is strongly recommended that candidates submit their applications as soon as possible.

Southern International School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Please note that should your application be successful a police check will be undertaken in the country of origin; in the UK, a disclosure will be requested from the UK’s Disclosure and Barring Service.

How to apply:

Please send the following documents as attachments

to the current Head of School, Miss Kerry Bell

(kerry.bell@southerninter.ac.th).

• A letter of application

• A brief educational philosophy statement (two pages maximum)

• A current two-page cv including contact details of two referees. One should be from the Headteacher, Chair of Governors or Owner of your current/most recent school

About Southern International School HatYai

The Southern International School Hat Yai was established in 2015 to serve the needs of both Thai nationals and expatriates in the region who wish their children to have a broad and balanced international education. School enrolment currently stands at approximately 190 students with classes ranging from Early Years to Year 11. The Primary section follows the International Primary Curriculum whilst the curriculum for Years 7-11 is based on the National Curriculum of England and follows Cambridge Secondary 1 and IGCSE.

In June 2019 we were awarded the  ISQM Silver accreditation, a massive achievement for such a young school. Our report describes us a '"good school" and notes that "Students' personal development and the school's partnership with parents are outstanding." It adds, "Teachers' subject knowledge is outstanding" and "Teachers plan lessons that are exciting and interesting."

At a recent marketing event we had a tremendous amount of support from our  current parents, who spoke openly to prospective parents about the trust they placed in our school and the amount of individual care and attention paid to their children by our teaching staff. The students feel nurtured, cared for and have many opportunities to learn 21st Century skills and eternal values. We are a happy school. Please look at our Facebook page to get a feel for our culture.

As a young school we are looking for people who are not only excellent teachers but  also willing to contribute to the overall development of the school over the coming years as we make innovation, creativity, integrity, development and professionalism the core values of everyone working at the school. If you would like to be part of a team working together in a professional and collegiate environment then this is the school for you. We are happy for any shortlisted candidate to communicate with our current teachers to get their perspective on living in Hat Yai and working at SIH.
