Job overview

Redwood School in Rochdale is a dynamic, ambitious and caring school with 253 children and young people aged 11-19 on roll with autism, severe sensory and physical impairments and severe and complex learning difficulties. The Headteacher will retire in September 2017 and Governors are seeking to appoint a new Headteacher with the determination to build on the school’s strengths and ensure it consistently provides outstanding outcomes for all of its children and young people.

The school was recently graded as ‘Good’ with some outstanding features and with increased demand for places, an expansion of the current site planned and a talented and committed team it is very much on an upward trajectory. The Redwood Education and Enterprise Centre, an off-site provision offering employability and independence programmes to post 16 students, and a Supported Internship Programme with local businesses also have significant potential for further growth.

Central to the school’s success has been a commitment to providing an educational experience, which stimulates and develops the whole person, preparing them with the skills to enjoy rewarding lives beyond school. This has been achieved by being flexible and adaptable and providing an extensive and continually developing curriculum. At the heart of the school is a dynamic and talented staff who are focussed on embedding best practice and providing consistently high quality teaching and learning where all children and young people are challenged to achieve their potential and where everyone makes the best progress at all times. Staff value their own professional development and are motivated to be a part of the school’s continuing development and success. The school also has an excellent reputation locally and is committed to continuing to be outward facing, learning from and supporting other schools.

The new Headteacher will further develop the strengths of the school, bring fresh challenge and ideas and provide the inspirational leadership that will see the school being recognised as ‘Outstanding’. This is an exciting time for the school as it seeks to develop and enhance all aspects of its provision and while the Governors recognise it will take a lot of hard work they are seeking a Headteacher who shares their excitement and optimism.

If you have an outstanding track record as a senior leader in education and previous experience in an SEN setting, together with the determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment. Applicants must be committed to high quality teaching and learning and should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are reached. You will need a ‘can-do’ attitude that can inspire and engage students, parents/carers, staff and the local community. The role needs a compassionate and strong leader who can hold staff to account whilst being accountable yourself. You must be confident and positive and have the skills to build relationships with a wide variety of external partners. Above all, you will share the passion and belief that children and young people, their learning and developing their potential are at the heart of all decisions.
