Newfield School and Specialist College

Located in Edge Lane area of Crosby in Sefton Local Authority, Newfield School is an all age (5 – 16) special school for pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.  The school caters for both boys and girls, although there is a much higher proportion of boys.  The maximum number of pupils is 91.  The most recent Ofsted inspection was in May 2011, when the overall judgement was that Newfield School is an Outstanding School.

The school’s catchment area is wide and pupils are drawn from throughout Sefton.  Pupils arrive at different ages and leave when deemed to be appropriate to integrate into mainstream education.  Liaison with other schools is good and there are very good links with external agencies, industry and commerce to facilitate visits, work experience and mentoring.

There are currently 15 teachers, including one who has responsibility for outreach and the reintegration of pupils into mainstream school.  There are specialist teachers for Art, Food and Textile Technology, Design Technology, Science and Music.  Class teachers teach the remaining curriculum subjects.
There is a strong team of non-teaching staff offering support throughout the school.  There is a Deputy Headteacher in the Senior Department and an Assistant Headteacher for Primary. There are also two Learning Mentors and a recently appointed Attendance Officer.  Each classroom has its own Teaching Assistant.

In September 2008, the school was awarded Specialist SEN College status, with a focus upon behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.  At Key Stages 3 and 4, there is now an increased emphasis upon improving attainment in English, Maths and Personal and Social Development.

The school office comprises three members of staff, which includes the Office Manager / Bursar.  It is a very busy office, which is responsible for the administration of the school, including liaison with visitors, pupils and staff through to financial management and personnel support.

Newfield School follows DfES guidelines for ‘Safeguarding Children and Safer Recruitment in Education’ 2007.  We have a detailed policy for Child Protection, which has been approved by the Governing Body and which is adhered to by all staff and which is referred to for the recruitment of any new employees.  This policy will be made available to the successful candidate.
