Job overview

Millfield breaks the mould as an activist educator providing an education and experience that honours the individual. Founded in 1935 with six pupils from India, Millfield has grown to become one of the world’s leading co-educational boarding schools. The Prep School, which was founded in 1945, and Pre-Prep, founded in the 1980s, are located in over 160 acres of fields and woodland near Glastonbury, a 10-minute drive from Millfield, and educate around 450 boys and girls between the ages of 2-13.

Pupils in the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools benefit from excellent facilities, including a 25m heated indoor pool and tennis courts, and the expertise of coaches for sporting and creative activities. Class sizes are small, and pupils benefit from an individualised approach to teaching and learning in spacious classrooms with plenty of opportunities for outdoor learning. Boarding forms a vital part of life at Millfield Prep, with 120 pupils currently full or weekly boarding from the age of 7 to 13. The vast majority of pupils transition to the senior school (around 95%).

Millfield Prep School has inspired generations of pupils to immerse themselves in academic study, culture and sport and to realise their intellectual, creative and physical potential. Proudly diverse, with a truly comprehensive academic admissions policy, the school seeks to find the best in everyone. There will be a relentless focus on children as individuals and on every teacher and leader getting better every year.

The Head and Governors of Millfield School now look to appoint a truly ambitious and forward-thinking new Head following the successful tenure of Shirley Shayler. This is a rare opportunity for a dynamic and driven individual to help build on Millfield Prep’s impressive national and international reputation, working collaboratively within a high-calibre Executive Group, striving to deliver a world-class education at Millfield and beyond. The school and the Head are members of IAPS and the BSA.

Further information on Millfield Prep School can be found at Millfield Prep School and a candidate brief is available from www.odgers.com/81323

Letters of application and CVs should be submitted by the closing date, 9.00am GMT on Wednesday 3 February 2021, to Peter Lawrence at Odgers Berndtson.

Millfield is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Millfield Prep offers an exceptional, all-round educational experience that puts the individual at the centre, in order to develop and discover their brilliance. Nestled in the beautiful Somerset countryside, Millfield Prep is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school for pupils aged 2-13, founded in 1945. We provide the ideal environment in which to grow up, foster a love of learning and create lifelong childhood memories. We pride ourselves on providing an exceptional, all-round education where every child can discover their brilliance. Our fundamental belief is that every child is unique and that they all have their own special talents which they enjoy and excel at and which we celebrate.

The school’s facilities are unrivalled and our teaching provision immerses pupils in limitless opportunities so that wherever their passions lie, they will excel in academics, arts, music and sport, all in one place. Our focus is teaching pupils a broad, balanced and individually tailored programme, with academically challenging opportunities for our most able and support for those who need it. We promote confidence, health and wellbeing through involvement in sport and physical activity. We have around 150 full time boarders, many of whom are UK-based children but also children from 27 other nationalities, living in 5 boarding houses, and 250 day pupils.

We believe that all our pupils are brilliant at something and it is our job to help them find what that is. They gain a real sense of achievement from the variety of co-curricular activities on offer, the wide range of clubs include Kit Car Club, Programming & Coding Club to Soft-Toy Making and Skateboarding. Millfield Prep’s outstanding facilities across 200 acres, allow pupils to excel. Whether it’s swimming in our 25-metre indoor swimming pool, playing golf on our 9- or 18-hole golf courses, playing on our numerous sports pitches or horse riding in our fantastic equestrian centre which features over 120 acres of hacking trails and a British Eventing (BE) cross-country course.

The teaching staff at MPS are hugely committed and, in turn, the School supports them fully in their own professional development. A warm, friendly staff room that embodies a positive, can-do attitude makes MPS a fantastic place to work.
