Founded in 1985, The British School of Lanzarote is now home to 230 students and families and 40 staff members. The majority of our students are local but we also have students from all around the world. The use of English is at the heart of everything we do and we pride ourselves on the levels of Spanish our students achieve. With strong family values, our school has built a fantastic reputation as a leading independent school on the island, recognised for its holistic approach and focus on progress for all members of our community. Using the National Curriculum and building in International and Personal learning elements, the school guides their learners towards international qualifications at Key Stage 4 and 5.  The school is set across two sites and is in a period of growth and transition.

Key Accountabilities: 

1. Strategic 

Provide inspiring and purposeful leadership for staff and students 

Work with the owner, staff, parents and students to develop and maintain a vision which is fulfilling and engaging for staff and students 

Ensure continuous improvement is achieved through the development and implementation of a School Development Plan (SDP) 

Monitor and evaluate the performance of the school and report to the owner 

Represent the school in the local community to increase awareness, knowledge and respect for the school 

Ensure that relevant policies and procedures, and systems are up to date and effective and purposeful

Lead the school through an upcoming inspection

2. Teaching and Learning 

Lead the establishment of a fulfilling curriculum and timetabling which supports the vision of the school and meets the required objectives of the National Curriculum, International Curriculums and required Spanish Curriculum elements

Create an environment and set expectations that promote excellent teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement and good behaviour 

Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and learning to improve student achievement, using assessment data to drive standards upwards 

Maintain an effective partnership with parents, key stakeholders and wider community to support and improve student achievement and personal development 

Ensure safeguarding of pupils under the school’s care and assure that we prioritise their welfare and wellbeing


3. Leading and Managing Staff

Work effectively with the Senior Leadership Team

Ensure effective management of staffing levels which meet the needs of the curriculum and students, identifying and recommending future recruitment needs, and the implementation of timely and effective recruitment and induction of new colleagues into the school. 

Plan, allocate, support, and evaluate work undertaken by teams and individuals ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities, ensuring all staff are held to account for their professional conduct, performance, and practice. 

Implement and maintain effective systems for the management of staff performance, challenging and motivating others to achieve high goals 

Promote and monitor ongoing professional development of self and staff, including the induction of new teachers 


• Knowledge of Spanish, or willingness to learn Spanish would be an advantage.

• UK candidates will require Spanish Residency, NIE / TIE to apply or to have begun the process of obtaining an NIE.
