Job overview

ADVERT

Headteacher

L37-43, Harrogate

Start date: September 2023

St. Aidan’s Church of England High School has been a central part of Harrogate’s community for over half a century and currently has just under 2,000 pupils on roll, including 650 in its sixth form which is delivered in partnership with St John Fisher Catholic High School.

The school has established an excellent reputation for providing a highly inclusive learning experience – continually achieving excellent academic results and providing students with opportunities to excel in the creative arts and sports. Recognised as one of the highest achieving comprehensive schools in the country, it’s no surprise therefore that the school is consistently over-subscribed.

The school’s Christian values are an integral part of its day-to-day activities and inspire and inform its ethos: Life in all its fullness.

The school will look to its new headteacher not solely to manage and maintain our strengths, but to build on them. An exceptional leader who can challenge, support, and stretch an already strong team, you’ll understand how to nourish an organisational culture founded on continuous professional development and learning.

It’s important not only that your own values resonate with the Christian ethos of the school, but that you can also embed these personal values into daily school life. You will nurture a learning environment that is welcoming and inclusive, where students feel safe and cared for, and where they have the opportunity to develop as individuals, as well as achieving their academic potential.

This is a fantastic career opportunity – to take on a leadership role in a school where high expectations are shared by staff and students alike and where all feel they have a stake in the school’s success. Harnessing and fully realising the potential of such a school requires sophisticated and assured leadership skills, founded on the highest aspirations for every pupil who passes through the school’s doors.

St. Aidan’s is a great place to learn and a great place to teach. It deserves a great headteacher.

Closing date: Monday 13 February 2023. Interviews are expected to be held on 1 & 2 March 2023.

About St Aidan's Church of England High School

St. Aidan’s Church of England High School is a comprehensive School with around 2000 pupils between the ages of 11 and 19. Our Associated Sixth Form brings together more than 1,000 students from St. Aidan’s and nearby St. John Fisher Catholic High School, making it one of the largest school-based Sixth Forms in the country.

In the latest GCSE examination series, in 2023, 90% of all our entries gained 9-4 grades and 41% were 9-7. Our English and Maths results were also outstanding with 88% of our students obtaining a 4 or better in both subjects. These typically superb results place St. Aidan’s as one of the highest performing non-selective comprehensive schools in the country.

Results for the Associated Sixth Form are similarly impressive. In 2023, 56.4% of the grades achieved were A* to B, again placing us among the best non-selective schools in the country at Advanced Level.

The school, however, never loses sight of its essential inclusivity: we believe that all children flourish here, as we strive to be a centre of educational excellence where each and everyone knows the gift of life in all its fullness. In the wider curriculum, Christian groups thrive, our Music and PE departments enjoy national status, drama is fantastic, excellence in a variety of competitive sports is achieved every year and outdoor pursuits are available at every level.

St. Aidan’s stands firmly on its Church foundation, and we place particular emphasis on high-quality religious education and Christian assemblies, alongside the highest standards of Christian behaviour. It is the school’s aim to ensure that its Christian tradition is expressed in the values it upholds, in the whole curriculum offer and in its daily living. Another feature of our school is the variety and quality of our educational trips, both locally and internationally, made possible by the support and dedication of our staff.

St. Aidan’s has successfully led many educational initiatives and fully engaged with national and local partnerships. For example achieving Specialist School status in Science, Mathematics and Modern Languages, as well as receiving the International School Award, ArtsMark Gold, the Quality in Careers Standard, and the TES Best School Dinners Award.
