Job overview

Great Barr Academy is an 11-19 school on the outskirts of Birmingham with approximately 1700 students on roll and 900 students in the Upper School.  We are very ambitious for our students, community and staff and are innovative in our approach to drive up standards.  We are taking a two-phase approach to the education of our students by moving to a Campus model: consisting of a Campus Principal and two Headteachers (one for Lower School (KS3) and one for Upper School (KS4/5)).  This new approach will be delivered over the coming months, supported by the current Trust Executive Principal, and will be fully implemented by September 2020.

This is a very exciting time to join our school, with the opportunity to play a significant role in the design and implementation of this new school model.  This truly is a once-in-a-career opportunity We are seeking to appoint an inspirational, experienced and successful leader to drive up standards as we continue on our journey of becoming an outstanding school. Our children deserve someone with the vision and creativity to develop an exception shared vision alongside leading change with integrity and transparency.  We have a relentless commitment to improving the life chances of all children and our leaders must reflect this determination to achieve excellence for all.

This post would suit a suitably experienced Deputy Headteacher looking for their first headship or an experienced Headteacher looking for a new challenge and opportunity to work in an exceptional Multi Academy Trust.  The successful candidate will benefit from a wealth of support from within our family of schools, Trust colleagues and the Campus Principal.

About Us:

Fortis Academy is sponsored by Shaw Education Trust. We are based in north Birmingham and have a large, diverse and vibrant community of students. We have a well-established and very successful Sixth Form.

We pride ourselves on our strong ethos which values inclusion, good citizenship, mutual respect and collaboration.  We aim to provide a wide range of stimulating opportunities to expand our students’ horizons within an environment in which they feel safe and well cared for and in which they can achieve their best, develop self-confidence and flourish as individuals.  We encourage the active participation of parents/carers in their children’s education; only when the school, the child and parents/carers are working together will children excel.

Our large and established Sixth Form, which is rated as ‘Good’ by OFSTED, specialises in providing high quality Level 3 qualifications and Level 3 ‘applied general’ qualifications.  Year on year we are getting more students into the top Russell Group universities and are significantly exceeding the national average in doing so.  The breadth of subjects offered provides both our students and our staff with great development opportunities.

Our students are drawn from a diverse community and, as OFSTED have noted, there is “comfortable cohesion” and our students “work together and play together well.”  Visitors frequently comment on the pleasant, lively and friendly atmosphere in the school and the great sense of energy and purpose among staff and students.

The school has strong, mutually beneficial links with local schools, universities, employers and community organisations.

Working at Fortis:

We are very committed to the continuous professional development of our staff, and have worked hard to embed sophisticated, innovative strategies to improve teaching and pupil outcomes across the school.  Many of our staff have chosen to develop their careers at the school or have returned to more senior roles after a period working in other schools.

We have a highly developed and well established programme for providing NQT’s with the necessary support to achieve a successful and smooth first year in their new careers.  It has been described as ‘an exemplar of good practice’ and is frequently praised by our partner teacher training institutions.  Fortis Academy is an excellent place to build a career.
