Job overview

Brownhills School is currently a Local Authority school however we are delighted with our decision to join a very successful and ethical Trust from September 2019 who already have secondary schools in the Midlands and Staffordshire. More information will be provided on the future sponsor on application or during visits to the school.

We are seeking an ambitious leader with integrity, courage and unrelenting optimism to join our team. The educational landscape has dramatically changed, but our core mission remains the same: To prepare our young people to be the leaders of tomorrow. In order to achieve this, we need to recruit more of the best leaders of today.

Brownhills is currently a Foundation school and is based in Brownhills, Walsall close to excellent road network and transport links for Birmingham, Staffordshire and Walsall. It is a mixed secondary school.  Although we are a smaller than average school, we believe that this allows us to give the extra care, guidance and support that enables all students to succeed.   Alongside the academic success, the school is a happy and caring place to be. We say we are a small school with a big voice and a warm heart. The emphasis remains firmly on helping individuals to achieve the very best results in all aspects of school life, with particular support and guidance in gaining the qualifications, skills and experience necessary to follow their chosen career path. We are a thriving and vibrant learning community, where pupils are eager to succeed, and teachers are passionate and committed. Staff are mutually supportive of colleagues and we pride ourselves on our efforts to reduce workload and to look after the well being of staff and students. The school is a registered Mindfulness in Schools member and all students received training in this.

In a May 2017 short inspection, we retained the GOOD school grading from May 2013 and in a recent independent review were described as giving very positive educational experiences to all our students with very good behaviour seen from all students. Leadership and Management and Safeguarding remain OUTSTANDING and Teaching and Learning are strengths of our school.

We know that academic achievement of the highest order is within our reach and we now look to consolidate this progress and continue to push for further sustained improvement, as we strive to become a truly outstanding school. While our existing outcomes are in line with schools in similar context, we know that outcomes will rise steadily in the next two years with a real uplift in 2021 which will allow a new Headteacher the platform and stability to drive the school rapidly forward with the support of an excellent school improvement team from within the Trust. With this in mind we are looking for exceptional professionals to join our staff body who demonstrate the ability to achieve outstanding student progress outcomes and who will make a difference to the lives of young people at Brownhills School.

You:

• Have incredibly high expectations for yourself and others

• Accept that only the best is good enough within the context you serve

• Believe that all children can achieve

• Are excited by being part of a dynamic team

• Are compassionate and courageous

• Are honest and selfless in your pursuit of success

We offer a very competitive pay and package, details of which will be provided at interview.

If you are an experienced senior leader in a secondary setting, with a successful track record of sustained improvement and a determination to maximise the opportunities available then this role offers an excellent opportunity to challenge yourself in a new environment.

Applicants must be highly motivated, driven and committed to high quality teaching and learning. They should have the creativity and vision to inspire and lead change but also the focus to ensure successful outcomes are maintained.

Visits to the school are strongly encouraged. To arrange this and to have an informal conversation about the role please contact the current Headteacher, Helen Keenan on 07747 846530 or st-keenan-h@brownhills.walsall.sch.uk.  Closing dates for applications is  noon on the 18th April 2019. Brownhills School is a small, friendly community based on the border of Walsall and Staffordshire.  The School benefits from attractive grounds in a rural setting close to major transport routes (A5, M6, A38, M42 & M6 toll).

Pupil intake is truly comprehensive with pupils choosing to travel from areas further afield in order to benefit from the high quality of teaching and care, guidance and support that the School provides.

Academic standards have risen rapidly in the past few years, demonstrating the ambition of the school to ensure that all pupils achieve highly.  Alongside this, the School has continued to provide a dynamic Creative Arts programme.  The School choir is the largest in the borough and its musical and drama productions are excellent.  Sport and health activities are a key feature of a thriving extra curricular programme.

The School is run along department lines with each department line managed by a member of the SLT.  The size of the School allows for extensive cross curricular staff development which benefits all staff.  The curriculum reflects an emphasis on the core subjects, however it remains broad and balanced.

When recruiting staff, we see all teachers deliver a lesson before proceeding to interview as it is the quality of our teachers that makes the greatest difference to the lives of our young people.

We are interested in staff who are passionate about teaching as a career and want to make an impact here.  Subject specialism is important, however we like to employ staff who will motivate and inspire our pupils and add to the enrichment opportunities for them.
