Job overview

This is an exceptional opportunity to lead a high performing and oversubscribed school. The Willink has 1250 students on roll including 225 in the Sixth form; it is a warm and friendly community school with an inclusive ethos based in a village location close to Reading. The current Head is retiring after 16 years, during which the school has grown steadily in NOR and infrastructure, seeing sustained improvement to student outcomes and opportunities. Results sit above the national average and at the last Ofsted Inspection in 2018, The Willink School was considered to be a good school with outstanding features. It was listed in the top ten non-selective schools in Berkshire in 2019.

We are proud of our heritage as a Language College, and an international ethos remains with links to a range of countries. Most students experience a visit abroad during their time in the school and the International School Award has been retained for 20 years.

The school leads the Schools Direct Teaching Partnership and since 2020 has been the Lead School for the Mobius Maths Hub - one of forty National Centres for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics.

You will be leading a highly committed team of staff who are passionate about what they do and strive for excellence. Our ethos is encapsulated in the phrase “village school, global outlook”: to develop mature and responsible citizens who, as members of society, will go on to make a positive contribution to Britain in a global context.

Burghfield Common and surrounding villages sit in an attractive country location which is quiet, but is certainly not sleepy, with a range of activities for families and close links with the school.

Closing date: Noon, Wednesday 22 February 2023

Interviews: Monday 6 March 2023 - Wednesday 8 March 2023

We would welcome you to visit the school and meet with our students on February 10th or 20th. Please contact lbailey@willink.w-berks.sch.uk or telephone 0118 983 2030 and ask for Mrs L Bailey to arrange a mutually convenient time.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Appointment is subject to satisfactory enhanced status checks from the Disclosure and Barring Service. The school promotes equal opportunities.

The Willink is a mixed 11-18 community school with almost 1200 students on roll. We are the state school of choice for the local area and draw students from a wider region including Hampshire, Reading and Wokingham. Our curriculum is broad and balanced, but with a strong international flavour reflecting the school’s heritage as a Language College. Outcomes are strong; most recent examination results put the school in the top ten non-selective schools in Berkshire. We have experience and expertise in Initial Teacher Training and professional development and are a strategic partner to the Teaching School Hub Berkshire. The Willink is also the lead school for the Mobius Maths Hub – a national centre for excellence in the teaching and leadership of mathematics education, that covers much of Berkshire and Wiltshire. We are, in the round, a friendly, busy, vibrant school with high expectations and aspirations for all members of our learning community.

Our success is based on an approach which combines the highest expectations with sensitivity to learners’ individual needs, concentrates on developing and maintaining the very best standards of learning and teaching, and takes every opportunity to recognise and reward achievement. We desire all our students to “ Engage, Respect and Achieve” . We are very proud of the confident, skilled and ambitious students who leave us. These qualities are the result of the opportunities that derive from our broad curriculum and innovative approach.
