Job overview

Set in the beautiful South Downs National Park and housed in an old country house, Littlegreen School is a West Sussex County Council Special School catering for boys aged 7 to 16 with challenging and complex social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs.  We provide a high quality educational and residential programme judged to be good by OfStEd in February 2017 (residential) and November 2012 (education).  A new building with four classrooms was completed in March 2016 which has allowed pupil numbers to rise to 68.

On the retirement of the current headteacher, the governors are looking to appoint an inspirational leader who will build upon, and further develop, the school’s

  • strong focus on pupils’ levels of attainment
  • effective working relationship with parents/carers and other agencies
  • emphasis on developing teachers and leaders
  • excellent provision for pupils with high functioning autism
  • record of all round support and nurturing of vulnerable boys, helping them to develop into responsible young adults

Crucial to the success of this post is an ability to think creatively with flair and flexibility in a challenging learning environment and to engage and gain the respect of a highly committed staff.

The governors plan to appoint a headteacher who has a proven record of raising standards for pupils with SEMH.  Applications from staff with a mainstream or special school leadership background are welcomed. Effective experience of working with pupils with SEMH is essential.

The school’s current flexible boarding provision requires the post holder to carry out some residential duties.  A substantial headteacher’s flat overlooking the beautiful grounds of the school is available to rent.

We welcome visits and telephone calls from interested applicants: please contact Sue Rolfe, Clerk to the Governors, on 02392 631259 or bursar@littlegreenschool.co.uk. A full application pack can be downloaded from TES or http://www.littlegreenschool.co.uk

Applications close on Friday 5th May 2017 at 12noon.
Interviews will be held on the 10th and 11th May 2017. We are looking to appoint for September 2017.

Littlegreen School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all stakeholders to share this commitment.  All applicants must be willing to undergo screening including checks with past employers and the DBS. West Sussex is an equal opportunities employer and recruits from all sections of the community solely on the basis of ability to fulfil the job requirements.
