Thank you for expressing an interest in the position of Headteacher at Expanse Learning Wigan School.

We are seeking to appoint a Headteacher to lead ELWS. The successful candidate will be passionate about reducing inequalities in education, special educational needs and secondary education. They will be an outstanding, inspirational senior leader, they will motivate, challenge and empower our school team, they will be an outstanding classroom practitioner, they will display the highest levels of integrity and uphold the highest level of commitment to quality, policy, procedure and safeguarding.

ELWS is in very good shape, you will find a well-run, well-established thriving Independent Special School, that currently holds a ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ features Ofsted rating (June 2025). You will have the opportunity to lead a school that has an open, friendly culture, that is nurturing to students, has supportive parents and engages with the wider community.

Expanse Learning Wigan School is approved by the Secretary of State (Section 41).

Our school provides places for a maximum number of 90 students and consequently is a small, personalised and nurturing environment for young people aged 11-16 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities, Social, Emotional Mental Health issues and for those young people who have found a mainstream school environment a little overwhelming.

It is our aim to:

To enable our students to develop we create a happy, safe and effective learning environment where everyone is valued. We aim to provide a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum. By this, we mean students will be introduced to a wide range of concepts, experiences, knowledge and skills at a level appropriate to each individual.
