Job overview

We are looking for a committed and experienced person who will play a key leadership role in our Facilities Department, working alongside and supporting the Head of Estates and Facilities in the delivery of the department objectives. You will be responsible for ensuring that all daily activity, site operations and construction works comply with relevant legislation and regulations. In so doing, you will ensure the development of a safety-conscious culture throughout the school.

This position is an exciting opportunity for someone who is a resilient, enthusiastic multi-tasker who thrives in a busy and demanding role.

Bedales School is a unique educational establishment set in the beautiful Hampshire countryside. Our aim is to create an environment where questioning, divergent thinking, and freedom to learn from mistakes are all encouraged. Central to our success is the sense that each person is a member of our community whose voice is entitled to be heard and treated with respect. Both our staff and students expect of each other the best kind of relationships – co-operative, authentic and trustful.

Experience & Background

The successful candidate will need to be a reliable and capable individual with the ability to work collaboratively with others and effectively as a team. Experience in a comparable role is essential, with extensive practical knowledge of Health and Safety regulations and best practice in relation to their application within a diverse multi-use working environment.

Duties

You will be responsible for:

  • The day-to-day management of Health and Safety across the Three Schools, including policy, organisation, planning, and implementation, measuring, review and audit.
  • Advising the Head of Estates and Facilities and the Senior Management team on the operational direction of Health, Safety and Fire and alerting them to developments and changes in Health, Safety and Fire legislation.
  • Ensuring best practice and offering professional advice across the Three Schools as required.
  • Acting as the Three Schools Lead and designated “Competent Person” for Health, Safety and Fire.
  • Participating in the continuing development of robust, transparent Health & Safety systems and procedures and committing to the cultivation, growth, and maintenance of a positive Health & Safety culture throughout the Facilities Department and the Three Schools.
  • Overseeing accident/incident management, including the completion of investigations, collating incident data and statistical reporting.
  • The management of Health & Safety training and assessments relating to Fire, Manual Handling, Working at Heights, DSE and Risk Assessments. Ensuring all staff have completed required training to ensure they can safely carry out their role.

This post is Regulated Activity.

Hours of Work

This post works year-round both during when the school is open and pupils are present and during school holiday and closure periods, and you will be required to work 37.5 hours each week, Monday to Friday, from 8.00am to 4.30pm.

Benefits

  • Free on-site parking
  • Funded healthcare cash plan
  • Pension with Royal London
  • Salary Extras benefits platform

Pre-Appointment Checks

All candidates will undergo a Safeguarding Suitability Interview and application for an Enhanced DBS and Barred List check and be asked to provide evidence they are eligible to work in the UK, on an ongoing basis, at the shortlist stage of the selection process.

Safeguarding Statement

Bedales is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. All candidates will undergo a Safeguarding Suitability Interview and child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers, a Prohibition from Teaching and Management Check and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The safeguarding responsibilities of the post include:

  • safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children;
  • fostering a culture of openness, safety, equality and protection;
  • providing a safe and welcoming environment where both children and adults feel secure, able to talk and believe that they are being listened to;
  • playing a key role in prevention of harm and an equal responsibility to act on any suspicion or disclosure that may indicate a child is at risk of harm;
  • when concerned about the welfare of a pupil, acting in the best interests of the pupil.

All staff have a key role to play in identifying concerns early and in providing help for children.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the school is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions (including those which are "spent" unless they are "protected" under the DBS filtering rules) in order to assess their suitability to work with children.
