St John’s Special School and College provides outstanding specialist provisions for students with Special Educational and Complex Medical Needs.

We are seeking to recruit a Health Support Worker to support the medication, care and health needs of our students across the school 

This post involves:

• Preparing and administering medication

• Preparing and administering gastro feeds

• Maintaining accurate records in relation to medications and feeds and training

• Liaising with the nursing team and class staff to arrange medical training

• Supporting student’s health care

• Supporting personal care needs of students

• Working in co-operation with other team members and health professionals

• Being responsible for ordering, stock taking and replenishing First Aid supplies across the school

Support pupils by:

• Following all agreed care plans

• Supporting medical and education staff within school

• Dosing and administering prescribed medications

• Being responsible, alongside the nursing team, for collection and safe storage of all medication.

• Carrying out specific health care procedures including care of pupils requiring enteral feeding (gastrostomy, naso-gastric, jejunostomy etc.), catheterisation, blood sugar monitoring.

• Assisting with oxygen administration and suction, following agreed care plans.

• Supporting education staff to administer emergency medication

• Having knowledge of how to use specialist equipment.

• Carry out all medical tasks, following training, to ensure that pupils are ready to learn.

• Monitoring and assisting with the implementation of care plans and providing input when they are updated.

Staff may be based at one of our two sites in Kempston.

The hours are 32.5 per week, term time only, plus 5 training days or twilight sessions
