Because children deserve the best.

This is a uniquely important time to join Ofsted. We know that the system continues to face extraordinary pressures. These pressures further emphasise our role as a force for improvement and the importance of understanding the quality of education that children are experiencing.

Our education inspection framework has curriculum and the quality of education at its heart. If you join us as one of Her Majesty’s Inspectors (HMI), you will use this framework and your expertise to shine a light on good practice and constructively challenge where schools need to improve. You will receive excellent training, so that your existing expertise is used to maximum impact. As you develop as an HMI, you may also have the opportunity to use your subject expertise through research and specialist work.

We are looking for professionals from across primary (including early years) and secondary schools. Leadership experience will be essential; you might be a headteacher, deputy head or head of a secondary school department. Whichever path your career has taken so far, you will also:

  • have a proven track record of improvement
  • be an inspirational and credible communicator, confident in making judgements and passionate about improving outcomes
  • understand good practice, complemented by the ability to analyse evidence and present it fairly and clearly.

Above all, you will be resilient, acting with confidence, conviction and integrity in the face of challenge.

For more information about the role, our contact details, and to apply, please visit our website.

We will be holding a live webinar 4.30 – 5.45pm on Monday 24 January 2022. The webinar will be presented by Senior HMI and HMI from our Schools team. The webinar will provide an opportunity for you to learn more and ask us questions about the role. To attend, please contact us to register in advance.

If you think you have the right experience and are excited about working with us, we would welcome an application.

The closing date for applications is 11.55pm on Monday 31 January 2022.

Please note that we may be able to accommodate part-time working patterns in the role, depending on how these interact with the nature of inspection work. If you would like to explore the feasibility of this in advance of submitting an application, please contact us.
