Overall Purpose

The Social Studies department offers a broad and challenging program; a sequential group of courses builds a body of knowledge, fosters critical thinking, and develops skills in research, writing, and oral expression. Students at ASL study the US AP curriculum. The department also sponsors and coaches students outside the classroom, such as debate and public speaking, Model United Nations, and other appropriately related activities.     

 Summary of Major Responsibilities   

· Teach sections of Social Studies in either grade 9, 10, or 11/12, as assigned 

· Teach and lead an advisory group 

· Prepare, coordinate and plan curriculum with other members of the department, and liaise with other departments as appropriate 

· Monitor and evaluate students’ progress, prepare for parent conferences, complete report cards, etc. 

· Take responsibility for the safety and well-being of all students, while delivering an engaging and challenging syllabus 

· Exhibit knowledge of current trends, pedagogy, research, and topics of importance in social studies education by applying it in the classroom and sharing it with teachers on a departmental and school-wide basis 

· Organize and participate in field trips 

· Participate in regular, purposeful pedagogy meetings around standards based education and in professional development sessions 

· Participate actively in the life of the School, through attendance at events, committee membership and leadership of extracurricular activities 

· Any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the High School Principal     

Essential qualifications/experience

· A Bachelor’s degree  

· Substantive experience teaching Social Studies  

· Evidence of significant recent professional development 

· Excellent technology skills and experience integrating technology into the curriculum 

· Experience in a school with a similar philosophy, teaching methods and curricula to that of ASL 

· Willingness to contribute to school life outside of the classroom 

· A proven commitment to the safeguarding and welfare of children and young people   

Desirable qualifications/experience  

· Advanced degree preferred 

· Experience teaching an American curriculum, especially standards based education 

· Involvement in service learning programs 

· Knowledge and understanding of international and/or independent school communities 

· Teaching experience in an international environment
