Introduction

The School seeks to appoint an enthusiastic and committed Director of Higher Education & Careers Guidance Counsellor  who will be part of the Senior School Leadership Team. The position will be effective from 1st August 2021.

Working in close cooperation with the Senior School and Sixth Form leadership teams, the HEGC will be responsible to the Principal for all aspects of the higher education and careers guidance programme including its day to day management and administration. The successful candidate will work with some exceptional students and assist them in gaining access to the world’s top universities. At present approximately half of the graduating class of students go on to attend universities in the UK with a further thirty per cent attending institutions in the USA and Canada. It is important that applicants already have a good understanding of the applications and entry procedures to institutions in these geographical areas.

The Post

The successful candidate will be:

● a graduate with qualified teacher status. No specific subject specialism is sought, but there will be a limited teaching commitment;

● have an extensive and in-depth knowledge and understanding of higher education application processes including the writing of student references;

● able to develop an effective network of contacts in universities worldwide;

● be familiar with and able to administer university entrance assessments as appropriate;

● able to lead the provision of Careers education as part of the Global Citizenship/PSHE programme across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5;

● ICT literate;

● able to work as a member of a team and to contribute to the further development of the Senior School;

● relate well to young people applying for higher education opportunities with a good understanding of their needs and priorities;

● committed to his/her own professional development; and

● support fully the school’s co-curricular programme.

Remuneration

The British International School, Cairo (BISC) operates a similar teaching scale to schools in the UK which increases with teaching experience. All salaries are tax free and paid in Pounds Sterling. The current basic salary for a teacher with three years’ experience is £34,000 p.a. while the salary of the majority of staff is over £39,000 p.a. This post comes with a significant extra allowance

In addition all overseas contract teachers benefit from rent-free, furnished accommodation, private BUPA Gold medical insurance, annual return travel to the UK, and generous fee remission for school-aged children.

BISC was established in 1976 and has a reputation as one of the most successful schools in the Middle East. We teach boys and girls aged 2-18, with the majority of our students from Egypt, and our school's mission is to be a vibrant international community that promotes independent learning to develop global citizens.

In the Junior School, teachers receive specialist support in a variety of subjects and all classes have a bilingual Teaching Assistant to support the class teacher. With the exception of Arabic, all classes are in English, which many children speak at home, and children make excellent progress in their language development. The School takes advantage of the history, culture and geography of Egypt through a range of offsite trips and activities.

At Key Stage 4, students are prepared for GCSE and IGCSE examinations with the majority of students choosing to study the full IB Diploma. Our results are above the global average and the majority of our students go on to attend universities in the UK and USA.
