Your day to day duties as a HLTA would involve:

  • Providing support for learners, the teacher and the school in order to enable high quality learning experiences that allow students to learn and progress.
  • Using prior experience, current training and skills to support teachers and teaching assistants with the delivery of the curriculum, with ownership of additional responsibilities that contribute to the school development plan.
  • Being aware of difference, promote inclusion and ensure that learners have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop. Foster and maintain positive relationships with all
  • learners, parents/carers, visiting professionals and members of the local and wider community.
  • Using behaviour and management strategies in line with school policies and procedures and promote the emotional well-being of all learners.
  • Monitor, assess and evaluate learners progress through a range of activities and give verbal and written feedback to learners, parents/carers on their progress.
  • Contributing to the ethos and aims of the school by attending meetings and training sessions and by making a positive input at those meetings to the ongoing development of policies and procedures.
  • Contributing to the ongoing development of the school and support school improvement strategies.
  • Assisting teachers in the support, training, mentoring of other teaching assistants

Knowledge & Skills

  • Higher level qualification/s related to working with people with SEN.
  • Have English and maths skills at Level 2 or equivalent
  • Know how to use ICT to support your work
  • Be trained in relevant learning strategies, e.g. literacy
  • Have specialist skills or training in a curriculum area, e.g. sign language, literacy, numeracy, emotional development.

Experience:

At least 3 years’ experience in a related environment and have experience of supporting and supervising other staff.

Tor View School is a newly developed school, opening in 2018. They are a school that creates a culture of excellence and team work. As a diverse school, Tor View in Tavistock specialises in high quality day and residential educational provisions for children aged between 7-19 with autism and/or complex learning needs. Tor View is part of Devon and Cornwall Services in the Southern Pennisula, which includes Quay View School in Bere Alston and four children's homes situated in local communities in Devon and Cornwall.
