What does the role entail:

Support for Students:

  • To demonstrate high expectations of children’s learning and behaviour.
  • Build effective and supportive relationships with children.
  • Act as a role model for positive values, attitudes and behaviours.
  • Communicate with a range of different people (including children) and in different ways.
  • Show that you recognise (directly or indirectly) the contribution that parents / social workers make to the development and well being of children.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and other professionals.
  • Take steps to improve your own knowledge and practice,
  • Demonstrate an understanding of some of the different factors that affect how children learn (e.g. emotional, physical, cultural, social or domestic).
  • Use your knowledge of the children you work with to plan personalised provision to support their learning.
  • Have an area of expertise – an aspect of your role for which you have developed knowledge used to support learning.
  • Use ICT in your role but not directly with children (e.g. internet, database, Microsoft Word for planning, email communication, etc).
  • Demonstrate some knowledge of a curriculum related ‘framework’ (e.g. National Curriculum, QCA schemes, ASDAN, Primary Frameworks).
  •  Know about the learning objectives, content and intended outcomes for the activities you support.
  •  Know about how your school works in line with the SEN Code of Practice as well as Disabilities Legislation.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of a framework related to the well being and protection of children (e.g. child protection, health and safety, race equality, etc).
  •  Use an area(s) of expertise to contribute to planning and preparation.
  •   Plan your own role or make decisions about an activity.
  • Demonstrate strategies to ensure that learners are interested and motivated.
  •  Plan, in advance, how individuals will be included in the learning activity.
  • Select, prepare or create resources suitable for the learning activity or that support students.
  •  Recognise when an activity should be adapted as a result of an identified misconception or other issue?
  • Monitor students’ responses and give them personal feedback that will move their learning on.
  •    Use a range of different assessment techniques, informal or formal.
  •  Keep records of student progress as well as behaviour logs/records and access records in order to analyse.
  • Demonstrate a range of different strategies to manage children’s behaviour.
  • Recognise situations that challenge equal opportunity, and responded accordingly.
  • Use ICT directly with learners (e.g. interactive whiteboard, learning programmes, ICT equipment, etc).
  •  Teach an individual and have an impact on their learning or development.
  •  Teach a small group and have an impact on learning or development.
  • Teach a class normally taught by a teacher and have an impact on their collective learning or development.
  •   Demonstrate a regard for the safety of students.


Support for the School:

  • Be aware of and comply with the policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety, security, confidentiality and data protection reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
  • In consultation with the class teacher and in the context of the school’s policies, to assist in maintaining discipline structures for students.
  • Be aware of and support differences and ensure all students have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.
  • Contribute to the overall ethos /work / aims of the school.
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals.
  • Attend relevant meetings as required.
  • Participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required.
  • Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtimes.
  • Accompany teaching staff and students on visits, trips and out of school activities as required.
  • To carry out simple routine maintenance of equipment needed for the students.
  • In consultation with the appropriate professionals to assist in meeting the particular needs of the students in the provision of e.g. physiotherapy, speech therapy etc.


The successful candidate will have the following Requirements:

  • Must hold valid Right To Work in the UK
  • Must hold UK Manual Drivers Licence with access to own vehicle
  • Extensive experience working with children in an education setting
  • An understanding of the effects trauma can have on a child's presentation and/or experience working with SEMH needs
