Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join the team of Haybrook College and make a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable young people in the area.

About Haybrook College:

Haybrook College educates young people aged 11 to 19 who have challenging and complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health difficulties (SEMH) or medical needs. We have multiple provisions providing bespoke, child-centred and high-quality education programmes, which aim to ensure that all the pupils' individual educational needs are met. We offer provision for a range of pupils across KS3 to KS5, as a result of SEND, Managed Moves, Permanent Exclusions, or out-of-area placements. We nurture, engage and educate students who face barriers to learning, helping to make positive changes in the lives of young people and ensuring the best possible educational outcomes.

About the HLTA role:

We are looking for a motivated, enthusiastic and inspiring Higher Level Teaching Assistant to support pupils' learning and social and emotional development. This role is based in our special school, Millside School, and will work with pupils with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) who have identified barriers to learning in any of the four SEND areas of need.

The work will be hugely varied and will involve delivering a range of interventions, primarily 1:1 ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support) and social skills programmes and some literacy and numeracy sessions. You will be part of a wider SEND team and supported by the SENDCos. If you are an energetic, highly resilient and adaptable individual with excellent creativity, who can ensure challenges are met and problems are solved, then you will find this post challenging, exciting, varied and fulfilling.

Millside School is our special school provision for up to 85 young people with a range of social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. As our HLTA, you will have experience working with pupils with a range of vulnerabilities, challenging behaviour or SEND, and above all, have the desire and drive to see the most vulnerable young people in society succeed.

The ideal candidate will be from a mainstream or special school background with a strong understanding of SEND and have excellent IT, communication, administrative and organisational skills. Ideally you will:

  • Be ELSA trained, or willing to complete the ELSA training in order to deliver ELSA interventions to our pupils.
  • Have experience working with either small groups or 1:1 with pupils who may have complex social and emotional difficulties, may demonstrate challenging behaviour or who may have Special Educational Needs.
  • Be able to engage pupils with a confident and positive approach which motivates them to learn.
  • Confidently adapt content and delivery of interventions in order to ensure pupils' needs are met.
  • Enjoy working as part of a team and also able to use your own initiative.

This is a term time plus Inset Days role paid on the Slough Level 5 payscale (range 1 – 5). Starting salary from £24,343 (£28,302 Full Time Equivalent).

Interested candidates are welcome to visit the school or to have an informal conversation. Please contact Suzanne Green (Executive Head Teacher’s PA) on 01628 696075 or suzannegreen@haybrookcollege.co.uk to arrange.

Completed applications should be emailed to recruitment@haybrookcollege.co.uk by 9 am, 5 January 2024.

Haybrook College is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all of its pupils and staff. Applicants will be required to undertake a DBS enhanced disclosure. Haybrook College strives to be an equal opportunities employer and recruits from all sections of the community solely on basis of ability to fulfil the job requirements.
