Job overview

Job Purpose

To support teaching and learning in English and Maths by delivering planned lessons, providing targeted interventions, and helping to raise attainment across the school. The HLTA will work independently with individuals, small groups, and whole classes where required.


Key Responsibilities

Teaching & Learning Support

  • Deliver pre-planned lessons in English and Maths in the absence of a teacher

  • Support pupils in developing literacy and numeracy skills

  • Lead small group interventions to close learning gaps

  • Adapt learning materials to meet individual needs

  • Monitor and record pupil progress

Classroom Management

  • Manage classroom behaviour in line with school policies

  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment

  • Support pupils with additional needs, including SEN

Assessment & Progress

  • Assist with assessing pupils’ work and providing feedback

  • Track progress and report concerns to teaching staff

  • Support preparation for assessments and exams

Curriculum Support

  • Contribute to planning of English and Maths activities

  • Support phonics, reading, writing, and numeracy programmes

  • Help develop engaging and differentiated learning resources

Pastoral Support

  • Act as a role model for pupils

  • Support student wellbeing and engagement

  • Build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents


Person Specification

Essential:

  • HLTA qualification or equivalent experience

  • Strong English and Maths skills (GCSE Grade C/4 or above or equivalent)

  • Experience supporting teaching and learning in a school setting

  • Ability to lead a classroom confidently

  • Good behaviour management skills

Desirable:

  • Experience delivering interventions in literacy and numeracy

  • Knowledge of SEN support strategies

  • Experience working across different key stages
