Job overview

The College

Abbey Gate College is situated in superb surroundings south of the historic city of Chester. It was founded as an independent coeducational 11-18 School in 1977 under the Deeside House Educational Trust, as a charitable foundation. Our Infant and Junior School is sited at Aldford, 2½ miles from the main site at Saighton. The College now numbers circa 480 pupils, including a Sixth Form. Academic results in all subjects are excellent and 100% pass rate at A level and GCSE is the norm. The majority of our Sixth Form students go on to university or other place of further education. The College has a three form entry at Year 7 from an annual Entrance Examination held in January; places are oversubscribed and there are waiting lists operating at some age groups in the College.

The Post

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed teacher of History, who can also teach English, to join our thriving departments. The successful candidate will teach across the year groups in the Senior School.

There are three experienced members of staff in the History department and five in the English department. Both departments are dynamic and resourceful and work to enthuse pupils as well as encourage them to become independent learners.

The teaching facilities here assist these aims – each classroom has a 70 inch Clever touch screen; pupils have access to tablet sets across the College; and each member of staff is loaned a Windows Tablet (with integral keyboard).

History and English is broadly taught in sets throughout KS3. At GCSE, groups are mixed ability for History and ability sets for English.

The successful candidate would have the opportunity to teach the new Edexcel History course at GCSE as well as a small section of the OCR course at A Level. This would be in addition to a selection of groups (typically numbering no more than 21 pupils each) at Key Stage 3.

Pupils take Cambridge IGCSE English Language and AQA GCSE English Literature. At KS5 both subjects are offered: AQA English Language and OCR English Literature.

Curriculum

Lessons at Abbey Gate College are 55 minutes long and there are six per day. For History, Years 7 and 8 have two lessons a week and Year 9 has three. At GSCE there are three lessons per week per year group, and up to six at A Level.

English has four periods in Years 7 & 8, three in Year 9, five in Years 10 & 11, five in Year 12 and six in Year 13.
